I like the keyboard riff at the top, but the lyrics remain gross.

This is great, thanks! Stevie Nicks also covered the song, which I didn't know. Here she is doing it live.

pxe2000: “[T]he lyrics remain gross.”I was going to argue, but then I looked them up. Now I'm embarrassed for 27-years-ago me for ever letting this be a song that I associated with someone I care about. Although, in fairness, you can barely understand a single word that ol' Dave is slurring.

That Nicks cover is great, and basically tames the fuckboy vibe of much of the song. (The song has always annoyed me because the first few lines do grab the attention, and then it gets sleazy.)

It's really good and even after lo these many years I am still here for Dave's sleazy fuckboy lyrics.

I did the math. It's real close, but Petey won.
[T]he lyrics remain gross.
Yeah, you can't really do anything for the fact that it's a real wince of a song, though drenching the lyrics in production helps, which is part of what I like here. As far as stuff from my teens that didn't age well, it's still a more defensible song thematically than the also-oh-so-romantic More Than Words, in any case; I'll take "I want to, poetically, do it with you babe" over "if you really love me you'll have sex with me". Those close vocal harmonies, tho.

I’m super dense on these things, what’s the problem
In the lyrics? Is it just the sexual innuendo? Or is there something else I’m missing in the meaning.

I think Crash — and More than Words, now that I dig into it — are creepy in a patriarchal context (which we live in of course) but on their own are relatively innocuous. That means imo there's a broad range of ways for the individual to understand the songs.
In Crash imo the cringiest line is "watch you there through the window as I stare", which of course can have a strong creeper angle. It also is a fine lyric to describe looking at your partner through ie your kitchen window from the backyard.
More Than Words is basically a song about love languages.

It's the lyrics, which I don't think are gross but just cheesy. Like is this not the worst pick up line ever?
"Hike up your skirt a little more
And show your world to me"

More Than Words to me, in the context that the singer is in a rock band, is that the narrator wants to hear something like "I'm coming home to be with you", and not a quick "I love you" on the phone and then goes off to sing and prance on stage for others. And I don't even like Extreme so I'm giving them a lot of credit lyrically I'm not sure they deserve.

I think there are quite a few Depeche Mode songs that beat that. But yeah, it’s … something.

I found a clip from VH1 Storytellers where Dave explains that the song is about creepy peeping tom. Well now I feel quite the fool.
