Lia Thomas Wins an N.C.A.A. Swimming Title

Lia is in the spotlight right now because she won some races.

There are so many other transwomen and transmen competing across the world that aren’t placing in the top of their sports. Apparently it only matters if they are placing first?!? 🤦‍♀️

I stand by Lia. She’s well within and beyond the guidelines to compete.

Its disgusting to see people hate on her when she’s doing well (like earlier this week) and then accuse her of throwing a race when she loses like she did tonight.

The biggest fallacy I’m seeing is “she just decided she’s a female.” Bullshit.

If we had transgender care, support and acceptance for our youth, then maybe so many wouldn’t have to wait until after puberty or well beyond.

That said, she didn’t transition so they could win. She transitioned because she identifies as a woman and wanted to compete in the sport she always has competed in, but now is at a massive advantage.

I fully support her right to transition but I don’t think this is a straightforward situation regarding allowing her to compete. I don’t think there is a straight forward answer to this but I don’t think the NCAA handled this well.

I'd love to see just one of the people crying and rending their clothing over "unfair advantages" mention Michael Phelps and his scientifically proven biological advantage over other swimmers.

But you know, people love to ignore that stuff so they can complain about minorities doing well.

Also it is especially gross to see people starting their hateful comments wrt Lia with "I support trans people, but.." or "I think trans women are women, but..". It's 2022's "I'm not a racist, but.." I guess.

A lot of cisgender people truly don't understand what feminizing hormone therapy does to a body. You lose a lot of muscle mass, pretty fast. Even if you're actively countering that loss of muscle mass, you're still going to lose some, and the associated strength. And, while most feminizing HRT regimens include testosterone blockers, even estrogen monotherapy can bring testosterone levels down to the range of a cisgender woman.

The commenters who declare that Lia has an inborn advantage because of AMAB are almost always the same guys who figure they could win against Serena Williams at tennis.
