The Store is Closed is a forthcoming survival horror game set in SCP-3008, an endless furniture store that is definitely not IKEA. Here's the trailer.

The game is still early in development (after a successful Kickstarter). Planned features include:
  • Support for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S
  • Online four-player co-op
  • A day-night cycle
  • Resource gathering, crafting, and building
  • Craftable grappling hooks, parachutes, gliders, and ladders
  • Weaponized shopping carts: "Attach pizza cutters, knives, and nails to your shopping cart and ram into the staff"
  • SCP-1609 (The Remains of a Chair), SCP-294 (The Coffee Machine), and SCP-432 (Cabinet Maze)
  • At least one manager (boss)

It looks amusing, but I'm not seeing anything innovative in the trailer. It looks like a sort of re-tread of Five Nights at Freddies, or any number of other trapped-in-a-location survival games.

I can no longer shop happily,
I came in here for a special offer,

as long as they aren't wholesale copying I am OK if its similar to existing titles. The real questions is once they have built this out can the extend it to other store franchises? I am thinking of a certain membership warehouse chain....

I did once get lost in an Ikea in the Netherlands. My dutch isn't great, but I knew the word for exit. I Thought I was following the "shortcut to exit" signs but I ended up back in the same spot about 4 times before I decided to just follow the long way out of the store. Luckily I had already filled up on meatballs before the journey.

Given that IKEA are embracing gaming culture (making a line of chairs, desks and variants of their pegboards with 1337-d00d branding in futuristic tactical grey), perhaps they should fully lean into SCP-3008. What's the worst that could happen to the brand if they did?

Well, clearly someone has read Horrorstör by Grady Hendrix. (Highly recommended, super fun.)

An utter bastard to get into FanFare tho.

Horrorstör and Grady Hendrix's other books are fantastic, agreed. I really want to play this game simply because that book in particular was so much fun that 'cursed DIY furniture hellscape' is instantly attractive to me.

Not the type of game I usually play but love the feel of it. So bored with regular monsters that mysterious things are very cool to me.
