I paid her $75 to call the police.

From just a few weeks ago, Maria Bamford – 28th Annual OCD Conference Keynote [44m] has Maria Bamford, um, giving the keynote address to the 28th Annual OCD Conference. She speaks at length about her intrusive voices and OCD, which sounds horrible but she makes funny.

"Here's what I love about 12-step cults. Number one. Free. Number two. Free. Number three. They cannot kick me out."

This is worth the watch.

Am watching! National Treasure Maria Bamford.

It is pretty bittersweet that she is still doing her parent's voices, as they have both now passed I think. She did a bunch of videos during COVID where she did her old material, but played all the parts. Except for her parents, who showed up, and Maria mimicked them perfectly.

"Maria, Maria... This is from former Israeli prime minister, uh, Golda Meir. She said, she said, Don't be so humble, you're not that great..."

She's been on several podcasts lately talking about this. I've seen her on both Neal Brennan's The Blocks show and Pete Holmes' You Made It Weird this week.

If you live in LA and enjoy attending oddly timed comedy shows in a tiny strip mall performance space, I recommend following Public Displays of Altadena for last minute Maria Bamford show announcements. Recently she did a bunch of 8am weekday shows.

Maria has been my family's most frequent celebrity encounter in NE LA over the last 12 years. Despite how much we love her, I've so far managed to refrain from begging
her to be my actual best friend. Maybe next time (although I hear she's moved to Alta Dena).

That's why I posted this speech. I think she might say something someone would hear and could spark something in them.

As far as I can tell, this speech was the beginning of this current round of interviews, I think associated with a book release. She's much more relaxed delivering the same stories in later settings.

Just came here to post this. I've spent the last year going through a major mental healthcare process (I had was on medicare for some of it) and her assessment of our system is SPOT ON. It is so strangely wonderful to hear someone else talk about how are approach to mental health really can add a second whole set of trauma to the issue being treated.

I will also now be referring to this whenever I express my utter loathing of AA. Her tying it to Catholicism certainly mirrors my experience. "All you have to do is ask God to help. It works even if you're faking." You know that taking the Lord's name in vein is, like, in the book, right? Like pretty early on? Seems like a weird place to start your journey into radical self-honesty.
