Thanks, lot of material to sink one's teeth into. I've having a phd in microbiology over for dinner today, I'll see if I can bring up the Asgard archaea without making a fool of myself...

so much intrigue! one tiny highlight via the new-in-biology round up: “The Cause of Depression Is Probably Not What You Think”:
“…the causes of depression go far beyond serotonin deficiency. Clinical studies have repeatedly concluded that the role of serotonin in depression has been overstated….Chemical imbalances, genes, brain structure and inflammation could all play a role to varying degrees. Browsing arxiv.org, one gets the sense that ML has, well, not "hollowed out" the rest of CS, but has taken large bite out of it. Quanta's roundup of CS gives the same sad impression. I don't hate ML; I think it will be a useful part of the future. But old-school CS isn't complete yet!
