I find it deeply disturbing that today's politicians don't seem to feel that book banning is one of the most repugnant, un-American things they could do.

It is certainly repugnant, but it is also very American. Book banning was extremely common on a state and local level, and only ended in the 1970s due to court decisions, rather than any referendum or electoral result. That strain of cultural authoritarianism has never been far from the surface.

Oh, it didn't end in the 1970s. It didn't end at all. It's been going on all this time. Maybe not as visibly, but it's always been around.
Maybe the reason why it's so visible now is because it was easily overlooked in the 80s and 90s, to the point that people think those court decisions in the 70s ended it.

That is true, there were definitely efforts to ban books by forcing libraries and schools to withdraw them. I should have specified that there were no longer criminal penalties for publishing or selling books banned by the local decency committee.

Unavailable in the UK, as well. It seems YT has also managed to fix the workaround where piped.video could display US-only content abroad.
