Got WiFi? Will Spy

“anyone from a landlord to a laundromat – could be required to help the government spy.” (Guardian) The Guardian covers the Houses expansion of Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA). Although presented as a re-authorization, “The Turner-Himes amendment – so named for its champions Representatives Mike Turner and Jim Himes – would permit federal law enforcement to also force “any other service provider” with access to communications equipment to hand over data.” [disclaimer: I am related to the author of this article.]
Intelligence Agencies argue that FISA is crucial to preventing terrorist attacks.
Meanwhile, Rolling Stone reports “Seth Stern, director of advocacy at the Freedom of the Press Foundation, warns Rolling Stone that the House bill “would let intelligence agencies commandeer countless American businesses and individuals to spy on journalists and their sources on the government’s behalf.” “

Thank you! I will contact the mods and ask them to replace it.

Representation my ass. Bills like this are most certainly without the consent of the governed, no matter how the string-pullers might fork their tongues.

"It will help us prevent a terror attack" is horseshit given how much of Jan6th was in the open.

We only care about foreign terrorism. Good ol' home-grown American terrorism is fine apparently

Wellll…
“The April 2022 order, for instance, details how the FBI queried the Section 702 repository using the name of someone who was then believed to have been at the Capitol during the Jan. 6 riot. But the information that was obtained was not used for any “analytical, investigative or evidentiary purpose,” the order said.”
I don’t think warrantless searches should be a thing, full stop. Regardless of the political leanings of their target, the FBI could not and cannot be trusted to use FISA without abuses. It’s expansion is a bad bad idea.
