American sporting hero regains her crown (of cheese)

CBS Chicago: Abby Lampe, winner of the 2022 Cooper's Hill cheese-rolling women's race, returned this year to regain her crown/cheese [Instagram]. Though absent in 2023 (won by Canadian competitor Delaney Irving, despite finishing unconscious and only learning of her victory in the medical enclosure), Abby won this year by the strategy of "...to go into the race and hurl myself down the hill and continue rolling." NYT: The race involves no sign-up form or waivers. GloucesterLive: The highest injury toll ever recorded was in 1997 when 33 contestants had to be treated. (there have actually been no fatalities or decapitations in recent times) Some footage and interviews, and pictures. Previously: 2018, 2013, 2010, 2009, 2003.

From NoMich's link:
The 2022 graduate with a degree in industrial and systems engineering was no longer the unknown American with braided pigtails in a black NC State sweatshirt. She stepped to the starting line at the top of the hill as the prerace favorite, the well-known American with braided pigtails in a red NC State hoodie.

cries.
speaking as a Tar Heel, I can't imagine anybody from Duke doing something this cool.

From the NPR link in the post:
LAMPE: I think I'm in my prime cheese-rolling age right now. So I think I might be able to pull some more wins out and continue to compete.

I must admit, my desperate wanting to be in this race is likely foolhardy and potentially impossible, but it looks like so much FUN.

It is sports today at Metafilter - is this where we can talk about how great the Tin Tin kit is?

She absolutely flung herself off the hill. I was not expecting that.

That (the footage video) was fun to watch. I'm working for Glos council at the moment on data, and this adds a bit of liveliness to their stats. Did twitch slightly at Abby Lampe thanking the Lord, who really helped, which is not at all the sort of thing we say around here.

First you fling yourself down a hill after cheese and then you riot over cheap beer. A perfect Sunday.

Have any us of rolled down a hill recently, sedately, with, like, keys in our pocket? How much pain, how much sorrow! I can't believe people willingly do this whether or not their pockets are empty.

On a scale of one to ten, jumping out of a perfectly good airplane with a parachute ranks at a solid eight most days.
Cheese rolling ranks seven, and only because I don't have to worry about the takeoff (only the landing).

I'm kind of curious about Ms. Lampe's health insurance arrangements.

That is a great interview, SweetieDarling, thanks for posting it. Covers a lot of (hilly) ground, including industrial and systems engineering.
