How'm I doing so far? wondered myself:
where’s Thelma Schoonmaker [content note: violence] this is how i learned in the ‘70s Scorsese worked with a different editor

OMG it's unwatchable for me! Everyone's so harsh!! Ah, the 70s... Though I do love the kitchen wallpaper.

I can't get past the first 2 minutes I was laughing so hard. His mother is GREAT. His father is a great grumpy old man.

The meatball sequence is quoted verbatim in our house whenever meatballs are made. Which is often. I also tell my wife to talk normal and stop putting on airs. This is such a masterpiece.

Also check out Martin Scorsese: Back on the Block, a 1973 promo short to support his film Mean Streets, both of which were also shot in this neighborhood.

If you've seen any of these films or even just heard Scorsese talk about his family and his childhood, visiting the area now it's impossible not to imagine the many past lives of Elizabeth Street — as I did yesterday while poking around for bargains (no dice) on the now tree-shaded and boutique-lined blocks.

Anyway, here's The Sauce recipe from the end credits:

Singe an onion & a pinch of garlic in oil.
Throw in a piece of veal, a piece of beef,
some pork sausage & a lamb neck bone,
Add a basil leaf.
When the meat is brown take it out,
& put it on a plate.
Put in a can of tomato paste & some water.
Pass a can of packed whole tomatoes
through a blender & pour it in.
Let it boil.
Add salt, pepper & a pinch of sugar.
Let it cook for awhile.
Throw the meat back in.
Cook for 1 hour
Now make the meatballs.
Put a slice of bread, without crust,
2 eggs, & a drop of milk, into a bowl of
ground veal and beef.
Add salt, pepper, some cheese &
a few spoons of sauce.
Mix it with your hands,
Roll them up, throw them in.
Let it cook for another hour.

One of the best things Martin Scorsese has done. Two of the greatest characters ever just telling stories in their apartment. Plugs you right into another time and place in NYC. Plus, a recipe. Chef’s kiss.
