Cat-Scan.com is one of the strangest sites I've seen in some time. I have no idea how these people got their cats wedged into their scanners, or why.

Happy 25th birthday, MetaFilter! I’m having a slice of rhubarb cake and a cup of coffee in your honor. This place, this community has been in my life longer than any person, with the exception of my family and a small handful of friends. I honestly can’t imagine how my life would’ve turned out without all of you wonderful MeFites.

I must have started reading MetaFiter around 2008 and after years of lurking finally made an account in 2011. In the years since then there were a few instances where I feared for the future of the site, and yet, against all odds, we're still here.
I'm very grateful and happy about that.

I'm mostly a lurker now, but I still read MetaFilter every single day. It helped kick off my career on the internet, spotlighting so many of my posts and projects over the years, and helped me connect to a group of internet weirdos that I'm still friends with to this day.
Like anything worth doing, it's messy and hard, but also a remarkable example of an online community sticking to its values even after multiple changes in management. That's virtually nonexistent online and, after 25 years, it's remarkable to see the people here collectively working to reinvent it as a nonprofit, make it more inclusive, and rebuild the code base — all herculean tasks for a project with so little resources.
I'm so very happy MetaFilter is still around, and I hope it outlives me and everyone else here. Happy birthday, Blue.
