The Otherwise Award (formerly the Tiptree Award) celebrates science fiction, fantasy, and other forms of speculative narrative that expand and explore our understanding of gender. Recommendations are open for the 2024 award - the deadline is November 15.

The Otherwise Award has a long history honoring a ton of great works, including:

Light from Uncommon Stars — Ryka Aoki
They Will Dream In the Garden — Gabriela Damián Miravete
When the Moon Was Ours — Anna-Marie McLemore
My Real Children — Jo Walton
The Orphan’s Tales: In the Night Garden — Catherynne M. Valente

At least two fabulous stories that have been longlisted for the Otherwise have appeared on MetaFilter previously:

"Steve Rogers isn't a self-made man." - "Known Associates" by thingswithwings
"Do that one again, you whispered." - "Ghosts", by Neustifter, a.k.a. Azure Husky

Oh, and don't forget the Hugos: the Lady Business 2025 Hugo Recommendations - you can recommend works and see what others have recommended.

The awesome and admirable brainwane, Sumana Harihareswara, bringer of stories to the MetaFilter community, is the current chair of the Otherwise Award Motherboard.

kristi, thank you for the kind words!

Works can be books, stories, music, video, fanfic, social media posts, or any other form of speculative fiction. We welcome self-nominations also! Please feel free to tell the jury about your own work!

Oh, also, Otherwise runs a fellowship to "support and recognize new voices who are creating work that is changing our view of gender today" -- apply by December 15th.
