For members of the British military travelling to West Berlin, here's an informational video from the tail end of the Cold War in 1989, complete with rockin' intro music. [SLYT]

Because of the whole 4-nation Allied treaty regarding Germany after World War II, the British military did not recognize any authority of the East German soldiers/police, only the authority of the Soviet Union, whenever members of the service needed to travel by the Autobahn to West Berlin. Hence this very very very detailed video telling you step by step everything you have to do to get through Allied checkpoints Alpha and Bravo.

The summer before the wall fell I took a train to West Berlin. The East German train was from the 60's. When the East German checked your ticket and papers on the train, he also made you exchange (buy) DDR Marks (impossible to spend). It was an overnight train, and occasionally you would see glowing industrial factories that looked apocalyptical.
