Classical KING FM 98.1

(playlist)

Classical KING FM is presently playing Christmas music in their own eclectic way. Earlier it was vocal choirs in intricate murmurations, now it's punched up. It plays what John Fahey famously once called Western High Art. But the palette of their programing has broadened to emphasize women and composers and performers of color. It broadcasts this reach of music 24 hours every day of the week with next to no ads. It has no news feeds whatsoever.

I've already heard Mel Torme and Marian Anderson for gosh sake. Yes, that Marian Anderson! And Mel sang the Christmas Song, which he did write.

All of of this was a legacy from Dorothy Stimson Bullitt, a local broadcasting pioneer.

This is the most eclectic super out of this world deep in history programming of mostly Christmas music you've mostly never heard before presented by hosts who know what and who they are talking about musically speaking and no news. I find it a refuge. Take a break for the holidays.

Delightful! I randomly discovered this station just a few days ago in a quest to find an alternate to my regulars one that switches to NPR at 3pm. Great to see it here, too.

Ooh, I’ve already found a composer I didn’t know, Beth Anderson. Her Quilt Music is a total delight. And speaking of total delights, her website, which she wrote herself, is a wondrous artifact from an earlier iteration of the Internet.

Nice. One can never have too much access to classical music. I would also like to suggest:

It’s astonishing how much rich people can do if they’re actually trying to improve the world. The Bullitt family shaped the Seattle area in countless ways. There’s a little display in the Washington state history museum about Dorothy Bullitt’s philanthropy and diplomatic involvement. There are a couple of madrone-forested waterfront acres at the southern tip of West Seattle with the former residence of her son, Stim Bullitt. He left the property to the Seattle parks department, to revert to Seattle when a life trust expires for his daughter(?) who lives in the house.

I'm up way too early on a Saturday morning, and this is such a calm and peaceful thing to listen to.

One of the first online communities I ever participated in was a dialup bbb that KING FM ran, called Chat Chat Chat (1995 or 96 I think). The on-air hosts would answer questions and engage with posters. I also got solicited for sex by "lonely women" so it was very cosmopolitan.

Classic KING is one of two actual radio stations in the Favorites list in my car (the other is the Seattle sports station, for my wife). It's a great station, and their efforts at showcasing female composers and composers of color is fantastic. Their approach to Christmas music this year has been pretty good.

I love this station, the “Calm station” as my dad calls it. Have really been enjoying their Christmas selections this year. Their sometimes unusual but always interesting choices made a terrific soundtrack for driving while looking at Xmas lights tonight. From a Twin Peaks mood to Oh Holy Night!
