United State of Pop 2024 (and 2023)

DJ Earworm continues to summarize the pop landscape annually with United State of Pop 2024 - Blame It on the Whiskey.
Additionally, since I didn't see it posted last year: United State of Pop 2023 - Cut The Flowers

this is an impressive mashup in some ways but i kept expecting it to transition into an analysis of pop trends in the past year but instead it just kind of keeps going with only a very vague musical theme driving it forward (sort of). interesting but almost unmusical

This's one I always look forward to as a sense of "What trends have gone on in pop, & what percentage am I at least vaguely familiar with?" as it changes from year to year.
I'm also a big fan of the Best of Bootie Mashup 2024 yearly roundup as well.
(Daniel Kim's Pop Danthology was also one I looked forward to, but it looks like he stopped the series after ContentID strikes got more aggressive)

Am I old? That seemed very unpleasant. I'm not a fan of focal fry, but when auto-tuned up an octave (or two) I have thoughts of murder.

I've enjoyed these ever since DJ Earworm started doing them in 2009 - thanks for sharing it here!
This year I think I recognized.... one of the songs, and five of the musicians, out of these 25 chart-toppers. More musicians than I expected to! In particular, if you had asked me yesterday whether I would be able to recognize Post Malone, I would have said no, and yet, there I sat, identifying him.

Sounds like an analysis of pop trends in the past year to me.
Let's see... bro country has almost completely eclipsed rap as the preferred genre for hit songs about getting fucked up, Sabrina Carpenter and Chappell Roan both had a hell of a year (but in very different ways), a lot of the lyrical content is pretty dark, SZA is a treasure, and Beyoncé and Taylor Swift are still two of the most famous people in the world.
Oh, and it's 2025, and MetaFilter is still complaining about Auto-Tune :)

I am old and I literally don't know any of these songs and barely any of these artists. All I have to latch my complaints on to is the Auto-tune. Which, in 2025, is still bad.

The name "Post Malone" to me indicates the era we live in. I was unaware that I lived in and through Malone, but evidently I did, for here we are in Post Malone. Here we all are together.

The average mefite I presume has aged out of the primary demographic for pop music. I know I have, so I appreciate that there is a yearly summary of tracks and trends that's more entertaining than reading the Billboard top 100.
And yes, I don't care for much of the songs either. This is fine. It's not prescriptive, it's simply what Americans were listening to this year. If you're not familiar with the artists, consider this your introduction. Sometimes I find a new song I actually do like, and I hope you all do too.

Interesting that this mash-up is just sort of so-so, because 2024 was one of the best years for pop music in decades. Even putting aside Taylor and Beyonce, you had big catchy break-out moments for Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter, Billie Eilish, and Charli XCX. Olivia Rodrigo's 2023 hits are still getting a lot of play. Plus great stuff from Hozier, SZA, Teddy Swims, and others. I just turned 49, and there is still great music to be found out there if you give it a chance.

Yes, I have certainly aged out of the primary demographic for pop music, and I don't get out much, so I hadn't heard most of these. But after listening to all 25, I'm going to be adding most of these artists onto a long playlist to spend the day with. Not the rap. Apparently, no matter how much I'm exposed, I'm just too fossilized for rap. In the main, it's damn good stuff.
Yup, the kids are alright!
Hozier's 'Too Sweet' rolled over into 'Take Me To Church', and I had to go listen to the lyrics to make sure I heard them right! Granny used to make me listen to 'the Good Music' when I got caught listening to that evil stuff.
So, I played 'Symphony for the Devil' in her memory.

Earworm was a neighbor of mine back at the University of Illinois. If you knew his real age you would be very surprised.
