That was great fun and has me fantasizing about creating an infinite version screensaver that shows you endless delightful pixelated artworks.

I wouldn't mind some ambling security folks saying, "look, don't touch" in french.

I love that, true to life, it funnels you through the gift shop before you can exit.

I love this! I'm going to post about it elsewhere, Going To Maine!

Whoa! I had almost this exact idea for years now. I’d like to make a virtual art museum app that lets you post whatever images in a 3D space that people can browse, and considered using DOOM’s level editor for it. It’s nice to know that it’s not entirely out there as an idea, and I really love the parody elements added.

I'd go to a lot more exhibit openings if they had that much cash just laying around for whoever wanted to pick it up.

(I like cheese. But we have cheese at home.)

There is a free-to-play sandbox MMO called Occupy White Walls (OWW) that is basically what AlSweigart is talking about, albeit more of a techno utopian Second Life type thing than DOOM.

It's been a while since I fiddled with it, but basically every player can build their own virtual gallery and feature whatever art they like that has been uploaded to the community (including public domain but also user-submitted works), and you can invite other people to come and take a look or open it to the "public."

There's a lot of highfalutin language on their website about AI technology liberating artists and such that raised a couple of skeptical yellow flags for me, but from a quick skim it seems like they aren't talking about *generative* AI (blech ptuey) so much as machine-learning algorithms that help players find art they'll like based on their tastes. I dunno, go take a look and see what you all think.

Just found out about this, and I love that the little Space Marine head now has hipster glasses.
