This shift is indicative of a resurgence in women’s use of thread, not as a domestic activity – but as a form of protest. Yet, given the sexist connotations associated with acts such as embroidery, knitting and crochet, why would women, and particularly feminists, choose this medium as a vehicle for their message? from Threads of resistance [Aeon]

Thanks for that. Goodness, I did not know about Lorina Bulwer. There are lots of other good textile artist-activists discussed in the article, that's just the one that struck me.

Thanks. My wife and I gave a presentation on craftivism a few years ago for the local art museum. Crochet is big these days with teens and young adults, so I'm trying to knit less and crochet more to pick up a broader range of techniques for creating visuals.

If you're in the Seattle area I highly recommend the current Joyce J. Scott exhibit at SAM. Scott is an artist who works with fabric, beads, and yarn to create amazing political statements. Quilts, wearable art, reworked clothing, sculptures.

Thank you for this post. I'm a quilter and am working on developing my craft into something more than cosy blankets (not that there's anything wrong with cosy blankets), so I appreciate this.

I highly recommend Let's Move the Needle by Shannon Downey, who is referenced in the article.
