NHL 4 Nations Face-Off

Instead of having an All-Star Game this season, the NHL and NHLPA are staging the 4 Nations Face-Off, which will run from Feb. 12 through Feb. 20. This is a round-robin tournament that will feature four national teams -- Canada, Finland, Sweden and the United States -- with NHL players from those nations filling the rosters.

Fuck Gary Betman.
Nothing wrong with the format or whatever, just... Universal sentiment.

It's too bad they couldn't include a Czech team.

The Washington Capitals are one of the best teams in the league this year, yet not a single player made any of these rosters. I don't know if that detracts from or bolsters the legitimacy of this showcase, but at least the All-Star game format guaranteed at every team had representation.

Who on the Capitals that are from the four nations involved in this tournament are you putting on one of the rosters? And then who will they be replacing? The one glaring Caps omission that jumps out at me is not bringing on Logan Thompson. Dude is having a lights out year and is obviously better than the three goalies that are on the Canada roster right now. Especially Binnington! That's an easy one right there. Maybe the Capitals told the NHL that none of their players were going to participate as they very badly need some rest? I don't know.

This would be more appropriate for MetaTalk. If there is a ban on sports betting sites here, then a mod can tell me about it.

Definitely Logan Thompson, but I think Dylan Strome and Tom Wilson (yes, him) are valid candidates to make Team Canada ahead of Cirelli. Jakob Chychrun on D for Team USA instead of Brock Faber.

Given a chance, I will always root for the Finlanders. Easily the bleakest, most hilarious people I have ever interacted with.

Russia is not in due to the Ukraine war and the NHL's decision not to do a shadow team as the Olympics do---completely understandable and fine with me. That said, I'm ambivalent about the NHL's relative lack of promotion that Ovi's likely to break Gretzky's record number of goals this year. Looking forward to the McDavid fanfare on the same in a few years.
Speaking of McD, there's actually a few people who think he should have the Captain Canada role rather than Crosby (of course you can find almost anything on the chat boards). I'm just happy that the passing of a generational role will go to another true superstar.

I love hockey, but this format is not super exciting to me. I'll watch, probably, but . That said, being Swedish I have to root for the Swedes! I also think excluding Logan Thompson is a huge glaring omission (caveat, I'm a Caps fan). I don't know, it feels like there is a LOT of politics and currying favor and stuff going on, more so even than for the normal All Star game.

While I think the currying favour is so bold and strong you could serve it in a bowl with a side fries and some gravy I also think that some of the players are just taking that time off.

Where have you been that the NHL has not been promoting Ovi’s season? nhl.com has a whole name for it, the Gr8 Chase, and they talk about it incessantly during broadcasts, the headline about last night’s game is “Ovi scores in loss to Senators,” etc. etc.
It’s fun! Sports is fun. Also Chychrun in addition to Fabes maybe, they’re both beautiful girls. Faber is such a pleasure to watch.
McDavid has said repeatedly that Sid should captain Team Canada. Will be interesting to see if they win but honestly I’m not expecting it. Wish they could swap Thompson for Binnington.

I used to be slightly sad this record was going to be broken, but Gretzky revealed himself to be a brain-rotted MAGA fool, so I just don't give a crap anymore. I was and remain on team Lemieux as the GOAT.

The San Jose Sharks have one player on the Finland roster (Mikael Granlund); I think the NHL might apply any Finnish team losses to the Sharks record. It's been that kind of year; better than last year's apocalypse, but sill very rough with the team in 32nd place currently.

NHL's internal promotion is not the same as seeing a countdown on CNN, or any mention recently in the NYT or other large non-WaPo media. The only hockey sports bar in Houston does not mention it all in social media. Maybe I'm relying too much on older events but I can remember when there were national countdowns to when will Lou Brock break Ty Cobb's record? When will Aaron beat the Babe? Now, it's all crickets in most sports as records get broken routinely but this is huge for hockey.

Ya. Why would team Canada want a big, strong, fast, goal scoring, tough, well respected in the room leader? Other countries are really happy that team Canada is similarly short sighted re Wilson and Logan Thompson.
Eye roll.

My bias is showing but I'd rather have seen Marc-Andre Fleury have one last international series than see Binnington on this team. Not like it's the Olympics level honor but Fleury is doing well on his 2024-2025 getting ready to retire tour.

Also maybe old guys and young guys teams. I think the young guys team gave stiff competition last time and maybe we wouldn't have so many 30+ superceding the 20-30yr old group, based on the past rather than the current record.

But it's time to push the edges of the league to reflect the rising competitiveness outside N. America, so. Good luck with this, hockey is too good for one continent and I'm here for a bigger palette of global showcasing

HERE WE ARE!
OK so I am actually not nationalist enough to be rooting only for Canada - my dislike of Binnington means I was very pleased that last night's game went to overtime. Loser points for everyone! GOALS FOR MY SPECIAL SWEDES (Joel Eriksson Ek you are my very favorite face in the NHL, love you Defensively Responsible Jonas Brodin) (my secondary team is the Wild, guys, I love them) and of course Sid and his 3 assists and his very public ascension to demigodhood of Canada. The narratives are all humming.
Acceptable outcomes for this very silly tournament: Canada gold, Sweden silver or the reverse. UNACCEPTABLE: USA gold. Narratively barren: Finland winning.
Along the way I would like to see Brock Faber do something spectacular (if he scores on Binnington that would be great actually, and maybe Gustavsson could have another empty-net goal too?? basically is there a way for Canada to do well while Binner is humiliated?) It's not like I think it's realistic for the US will lose every game, but I am so tired of living here and so tired of US sports fans in general and I already watched the damn super bowl. Enough.

I hear Charlie MacAvoy is out Thursday with an infection. Hope he feels better... later. And maybe Brady broke a rib last night? Hate to hope for it, but
Anyway yay Sweden for winning one in regulation, yay Sid for putting the Canada-Finland game away, please nobody else get injured. The Penguins play a back to back on the weekend so Sid better not aggravate that left arm.
Dreading the opening minute of the final, please don't try to top the opening 9 seconds of Canada-US on Saturday. I honestly don't think that fighting makes the game any better, it's not at all why I started caring about this dumb sport.
