This happened a few years ago off Cape Cod, but the man who was swallowed ended up a bit more squished.

That’s because it’s a real poncho, not a Sears poncho.

Between this video and the one about the great white following a kayaker, I'm thinking kayaking on the open ocean is NOT A GOOD IDEA.

This video is so great that it's making me rethink my anti-surveillance stance. Now I think we should video everyone everywhere just in case something awesome like this happens again.

Now if we could only make this behavior trendy among those orcas that attack and sink yachts...

Look, if you don't give the whales enough yachts to play with then you've got to expect them to make their own fun.

Did the whale take in the kayak, too? That’s a very hungry whale.

A number of headlines are saying the kayaker was "swallowed," but Natl Geo says humpbacks only have a 15" throat, so he was probably just tasted.

And no paddle in his hands

I mean, I can relate to the whale. You were expecting a certain texture and then you get one you did NOT expect and you're OH FUCK NO SPIT IT OUT SPIT IT OUT

I think that was actually his father!
And judging from the extremely brief clip of him talking about the incident, the guy is totally revved to the max all the time, and there was no higher number left on the dial even for watching his son get gulped by a whale a few meters in front of him.

I have eaten
the kayakers
that were in
the ocean
and which
were probably
just
having fun
Forgive me
they were not delicious
too crunchy
and too pancho'd

Yeah, humpbacks are baleen whales, that just filter plankton - I think you'd need to be eaten by a sperm whale to actually get *eaten*. I mean, not that getting tasted by a humpback can't kill you. That's crazy terrifying.

Bah! This masshole spent 30-40 seconds in his humpback. And survived a plane crash in the jungle. And used to dive for abalone with white sharks.

Really looks to me like the whale intentionally gulped that guy.
I've read that almost all land mammals, including herbivores, eat the placenta. So I thought maybe we don't understand humpback feeding as well as we think, and if they eat the placenta, maybe they're not completely averse to picking up other bits of animal protein occasionally.
But no:

But no:
Baleen whales' mothers, such as blue whales, do not eat the placenta nor bite the umbilical cord once the calf is born, unlike it occurs in other mammal species. Instead, the calf can be connected to the mother after the birth for some days, as it may happen with some dolphins too.Dec 10, 2024posted by jamjam at 11:42 AM on February 15 [1 favorite]
