Wikipedia:
The gulf's namesake predates the modern country of Mexico and is associated with the ancient Mexica, the Nahuatl-speaking people of the Valley of Mexico better known as the Aztecs. However, in Aztec religion, the gulf was called Chalchiuhtlicueyecatl, or "House of Chalchiuhtlicue", after the deity of the seas.[disputed – discuss] Believing that the sea and sky merged beyond the horizon, they called the seas ilhuicaatl, meaning "sky water", contrasting them with finite, landlocked bodies of water, such as lakes. The Maya civilization, which used the gulf as a major trade route, likely called the gulf nahá, meaning "great water".

I love the Nahuatl name, even though I haven't successfully pronounced it.
I wonder what the Seminole name is, or the names used by any number of other indigenous peoples on the north coast.

Me too. We've started restoring things to the First Nations names instead of after dead white guys and it is really nice if only so that dozens of things aren't named after the same guy.

Maybe we should go with the Gulf of Cuba (it's right there in the middle of the entrance), just to really get the MAGAs in a lather. Golf of Havana has a nice ring to it too.

I humbly offer GULF OF THE CARIBBEAN (or Caribbean Gulf) as a compromise - it doesn't AFAIK offend any particular country and seems kind of a natural thing, what with the whole Caribbean thingy happening right next door.

Bravo Gulf would be a nice subtle option (the river that forms the border between Mexico and Texas and empties into the Gulf is called the Rio Bravo in Mexico and of course the Rio Grande in the US).
