Why Dads Take Their Gay Sons to Hooters (NYTimes gift link, archive). Consider the delicious irony that a chain restaurant famed for its cleavage and chicken wings somehow became a secret sanctuary for young gay men.

I went to a Hooters once after going to the opera (we were being perverse, also a group of all women) and the waitresses were very nice, as I recall. Happy to have ladies there.

I'm just chuckling at the idea that what keeps boys from growing up straight is that they just don't get enough socialization into heterosexuality. Like thanks Grandpa, he was just one push-up bra away from normalcy until your brilliant idea to get lunch at Hooters.

when my grandfather went to the restroom, she slipped into the booth across from me and leaned in close. “You’re perfect just the way you are, kid,” she said, or something near enough to it, her voice low, kind and certain.Oh what a gift.

The next morning after that episode aired I was in a pitch meeting at work. With my boss, who was gay. With clients that worked in steel. It was very difficult to maintain my composure.
