Least I Have You, CocoRosie!

CocoRosie have released their 8th studio album, Little Death Wishes Comprised of sisters Sierra Rose "Rosie" and Bianca Leilani "Coco" Casady, their music is a heady mix of lo-fi avant-pop, freak folk and hip-hop with an often strident political, radical feminist messaging.

Beginning with 2003's La Maison de Mon Rève, composed in a Paris apartment bathroom using traditional instruments and various improvised instruments such as toys, all recorded with one microphone and a "broken" pair of headphones, their music is seldom anything but interesting and quite often simply magical.

Occasional collaborators with Anohni from Antony and the Johnsons, and as happy to produce sparkling electro-pop as they are stripped back, piano-led rearrangements of earlier tunes, the new album is as strong as anything they have done since 2003's Valgeir Sigurðsson-produced Tales of a Grass Widow (although YMMV and their entire discography is great).

It's worth having a look at their Wikipedia entry to get some of their (pretty wild!) backstory and the band website for the usual links and info.

The release page for the album on Joyful Noise Recordings is, perhaps, a little over-wrought considering just how much fun the band are to listen to but here's the least pretentious part of that release note:

"Through a process of unbridled experimentation, and a welcoming of happy accidents, which the musicians relate to more as magic, CocoRosie crafts every aspect of their music from song writing to the complex and layered electronic production. Often starting with beatmaking, using whatever is at hand, cutting scraps into patterns until it makes them dance. The melodies are simple and to the point, frequently generated from whatever children’s keyboard is lying about. At this stage in their co-created process, they need little to make their heartfelt, grimy songs."

Two singles with videos from the latest album are available: Least I Have You and Cut Stitch Scar.

If you want some new, left-field music for your Saturday and you don't already know them, CocoRosie are well worth trying out. If you already know them, I come bearing good news!

Thanks for the update. I dust off The Adventures Of Ghosthorse And Stillborn every once in a while but had no idea they were still making music. I've got some catching up to do.

I'll have to give it a listen. I went to a show of theirs a long time ago, after listening to their album of quiet vocals and music made from toy instruments, but the performance was filled with beat boxing, rapping, and singing on top of that. Dissonant! I wasn't connecting myself, but gosh my date that night was entranced.

It's been so long since I've listened to them, all I had left was an understanding that I like their sound and the barest mental cartoon of that sound. Thanks for this--a lot to delve into.
