It's not a recent trend... I've found dozens of examples of this from the AP, including being able to document three of them yesterday without even trying.

AND....this just came across the wire ** CORRECTS SPELLING OF WYNONNA ** from another stop along the tour.
What I think is even more disturbing (and you can't see it without access to the actual AP photo service client) is that the AP moved a shot of Ashley and some random hair stylist in Lincoln, Neb. who - get ready for this - had to style her hair when her regular stylist missed his flight from NYC! Now that my friends is news.
Many of you are figuring out what many of us in journalism have known for a long time - the AP blows.

My fave AP gaffe was several months ago, when there was a wire report about resignations in the Yugoslavian parliament (I think... can't remember exact details) over responsibility for a grizzly massacre during the Balkan war.
Poor bears!

That's probably the only time you'll see Wynonna and Bono share the stage. And that's a good thing.
btw, spell check wanted that to read "Wyoming and Bongo."

I think it was on the laserdisc of one of the Die Hard movies that printed a credit for the overweight black policeman buddy as being "From TV's Roc." [old, old show]
It was printed on the jacket of the disc, and they had to include a printed insert correcting the mistake.

As photoslob alluded, all sorts of crap comes over the AP photo wire; three different croppings of the same picture (as if the newspaper photo desks couldn't do that themselves), throw-away shots of celebrities, random pix of non-news events all over the country...
Also, as I said over at Anil's site, the inaccuracy in photo captions you're seeing here isn't new. Caption corrections have been been almost as common as photos on the wire for a long, long time. What's new is that Yahoo is here, spitting out the AP photo wire without any form of filtration. So you're getting all the corrections along with the content.
When AP solely served newspapers and other more static media, this wasn't as much of an issue; the caption corrections would most likely come over the wire before the paper was put to bed, the corrections would be made and readers were none the wiser. The Internet has eliminated that time delay, and that in combination with reduced editorial proofing (at least on Yahoo's part) results in more errors making it to print -- or, in this case, to screen.

um.... but robbie01, the old, old show with the overweight black guy was called "Roc." I'm confused. Was the mistake that the guy turned out to actually be Chris Tucker?

No, the overweight black guy in question was from Family Matters, a.k.a. The "Urkel" Show. He doesn't even particularly look like Charles Dutton.

mikrophon: Now there's an idea. "Wyoming and Bongo," a Starsky & Hutch meets The Streets of San Francisco meets Miami Vice with two country boys fightin' crime in the big city. Starring these two.

Yeah, they showed up at the Wheaton College and the writer caught the strangeness of the scene.
"Even in the most bizarre worlds, self-described spoiled rock stars don't make appearances at campuses so conservative students are forbidden to dance on campus."
You can't find a Chicago suburb more conservative than Wheaton. But hey, I'm moving out in less than a week!
