Is this really what "web design" is coming to these days?
Try Phenom Tek or Circle Graphics.

I hit my trusty "back" button after about 2.5 seconds of your "site"... try putting something useful up next time.

I don't see anything wrong with that site. It's simple and fast-loading without the shockwave or flash junk that populates so many sites.

True. Laurel Mountain Tech's page isn't very asthetically pleasing, or very design savvy at all. But then again, I don't consider them web designers. There are alot of things that could have been done, without using any "junk" to make the site slightly better. So no, "web-design" has not come to this - you should not be afraid to losing clients to places like this - because in the end - quality will win. There were alot of good discussions on this on the ol' glassdog (RIP) forum.
I worked for a company last summer that was run by one guy from Canada, who bought Frontpage, a FrontPage book, didn't know HTML, didnt know any of the graphic software, and started his "web-design" company. It went out of business shortly thereafter. After I showed himt he "drop shadow" effect in PS, he would take entire paragraphs of text and drop shadow them and put these 323k images in sites. Remember : OUT OF BUSINESS NOW.
Flash is alright when its used as a part of the site, and mixed well with good ol' html, js and jpgs.... but I cant stand it when its the entire site, and I certainly cant stand alpha fading effects, or those damn "exlosion/crash/boom/bang" sfx any more.

Well, I hate putting down sites (publicly), but that Laurel Mountain one was so... uh... 1987. Reminds me of this diddy... I'm with Satapher about the flash. To be honest, I didn't even stick around at the Phenom Tek one.
The last one was pretty nice. Just a tad beyond my 800 rez, though.
... could also be a sign (with Laurel Mountain) that they're so busy that they never had a chance to redo their own site. That happens a lot with good designing firms. You gotta judge them by the work they do for their clients.

What web were you on in 1987?
I don't mind mostly-text for informational purposes (usability and all that), but billing it as "web design" is ridiculous. Then again, these guys probably wouldn't know "web design" if it was, uh, 12 inches in front of their nose.

Oh, that was a self-blog?
Eric -- you should know that's a metafilter etiquette violation. We're not here to hype our own sites.
