This is a small homage to hundreds of performers who covered themselves with sombreros to become Slavic Mexicans. (via memepool)

The music on this site is truly amazing. And it's a beutiful illustartion of th fact that gorgraphy is no longer the dictating factor in "folk" music and "pop" music is as "folk" as anything. Enjoy children.

In 1948, the Yugoslav leader Josip Broz Tito ... broke up with the Soviet leader Iosif Vissarionovich Stalin

He never called.
Plus, they had almost the same first name, and that's just tacky.

This post is so cool! I was in a bierhall in Munich once & started noticing that German oompah music sounds an awful lot like the mariachi music I grew up hearing in San Diego. Turns out it was the other way around.

This post was fascinating. Velika hvala! ("Thanks a lot" in Serbo-Croat...)

The communist bloc and the cultural paranoia therein has led to some interesting musicl moments. In the sixties, teens behind the Iron Curtain wanted their rock and roll as much as the rest of the world, yet most of it was deemed to threatening and subversive. So they picked the form that they figured was the most harmess: surf instrumentals.

Shoot the curl behind the Berlin Wall, dudes.
