Proportional representation, anyone? At least with the Alternative Vote system, you can first-choice your conscience vote, while ensuring that you keep out the candidate you least would like to see elected.

Too bad proportional representation makes too much sense. I was first exposed to this through a class on the Troubles conducted by Brendan O'Leary, who I thought was absolutely brilliant. It also seems to work better with a parliamentary structure as opposed to a separate executive and legislature.
