Now go play Moonwalker

Michael Jackson is guilty of being totally excellent in this fantastic whirlwind tour of NES games (a la Sega Fantasy VI); MJ herein imposes his 16-bit self on a huge amount of games including but not limited to Megaman, Kung Fu, Ice Climber, Super Mario Brothers 1 and 3, Dragon Warrior, Arkanoid, Track and Field, Spelunker, Final Fantasy and more. If you know the Japanese language + games, clue us in. (Flash and hardcore midi dance music warning)

He did have an official appearance as "Space Michael" in the excellent Space Channel 5 (PS2).

I love how he kicks Princess Toadstool in the motherfucking face at the end.

My favorite part was when he became two flippers in the pinball machine. Awesome.

Seriously hot.

Did he punch Bowser in the butt?

Monkey steals the peaches.

That whole Bowser-in-the-Butt thing is a juvenile Japanese game called Kancho.

coach_mcguirk, I'm fairly certain that was a kancho. On preview, dammit mystyk!

Awesome.

Not to be pedantic, but after MJ died, he would have been on board 1-4.

This is way better.

"MJ herein imposes his 16-bit self..."

Uh, wouldn't that be an 8-bit self? Or have I suddenly grossly underestimated the Famicom / NES after all these years?

That was awesome, Octavius.

But I still wish I had a list of all the games in the crazy japanese one. I think I want to try some of them.

That was funny but I think I got a better deal by not actually listening to it. I had the Psychedelic Furs playing instead and couldn't be bothered to switch the audio over to hear the Eurotechno.

NES was indeed 8-bit, but this version of MJ is from the 16-bit Sega Genesis system.

majick: Moonwalker (the game this came from) was for Sega Genesis - a 16 bit game.
posted by absalom at 3:29 PM on June 30, 2005

But every game depicted therein is 8-bit. Hence the confusion.
posted by avriette at 3:33 PM on June 30, 2005

That's why he was whupping the other characters' booties. He had twice the bits.

Also, wasn't Moonwalker also for SNES?

Some games referenced not mentioned in the FPP:
Dragon Warrior II, Yoshi, track and field, Tetris, Milon's Secret Castle (Bonus Level), Bionic Commando, Mega Man III (Select Screen), Balloon Kid, Mega Man 2 (Title Screen), Pinball, Bomberman, Excitebike, Final Fantasy II (Japanese), MLB

This guy is good.

BlackLeotardFront: Moonwalker was released for the Genesis the Sega Master System, and in arcades. Nintendo tended to stay away from the creepier games at the beginning.

Cool.

That was seriously disturbing. I'm going to have nightmares about Michael Jackson Tetris now.

BlackLeotardFront: There was no SNES version of Moonwalker (it was developed by Sega), but there was an arcade version that is quite different from the Genesis version, aside from also vaguely following the plot of the "Moonwalker" video.
