Deep End Dining

Deep End Dining. The greatest thing since duck fetus and live octopus tentacles combined and slathered in mayo on rye. [via a comment made at MetaChat by edible energy]
And I thought that scene in Old Boy was pure fiction...

The balut egg (fetus) story is some GREAT writing.
Even though I live in Asia where everything's "game", and
I've tried many delicacies, it still freaked me out.
Giving it some thought; the only thing comparably repulsive to me might be canned Corn Smut (Huitlacoche). Although there's a few inviting Maize Mushroom recipes on this page titled Sweet Corn Disease Nursery.

As a very picky and very conservative eater, stuff like this literally is baffling to me.
How someone would voluntarily eat something that "might" be poisonous is as foreign to me as playing Russian Roulette.
Would this guy eat a pork chop that "might" have trichinosis?

After reading this blog for awhile, I was reminded of its lower-brow equivalent, Steve, Don't Eat It! Not safe for those with a weak stomach. Where the FPP blog made me mildly curious, the one I linked made me mildly nauseated.

Now I've just remembered the most disturbing scene from The Gore Gore Girls.

deep end dining is not really as much about the food (anyone could dare anyone else to eat scary stuff) as about the writing itself.
i've watched eddie's writing develop over the past 10+ years (he was best man at my wedding, and took full advantage of the speaking opportunity) and it's great to see him finally get this kind of recognition.

I can't see how eating a live octupus is a delicacy. Does it not taste the same if you kill it first? Or is it the suffering that people enjoy and pay so much for?

I dunno about octopus but live prawn is very much different to prawn sashimi that's been dead for a while.
