Success in this competition seems to rely on your luck with the mail system as much if not more than your knitting skill.

Hmm. I wonder if this could be spliced with ironcoder to produce a "Code Wars 2006"?

I'd do this, but it'd just be adding another project to the thirty thousand knitting projects I already have...

but I do knit a pretty fast pair of socks.

Finally, a postive answer to the question "War - what is it good for?"

Socks.

Sounds fun, jacquilynne. However, even with sock wars, I subscribe to passivism.

That's a hoot, fun idea for all those closet knitters out there. There is no doubt in my mind that my grandma would rule the earth in this competition.

Maybe they should send in the Sock Army.

I can't knit.

Should I just sign up to receive a free pair of socks?

This has me in stitches.

General Yo was no longer a young man. He was no longer a strong man. The time had passed, though, where he could use his advanced years as an excuse for inaction. This next battle would inevitably be his last, but he owed his country this one final effort.

The needles were still in his closet. Whale ivory, sharper than truth, with the names of his ancestors notched into the hilts. They shone like the sun, like the teeth of dragons. They would serve him well.

"If it is to be war," he growled, "let it be war."

"Sock it to me."

Judging by the comments, a lot of people are very happy and excited about about this. How very pleasantly disturbing.

Alas, I am not a speedy knitter, but I find the reception of the war by the enthusiasts really interesting.

Here at Metafilter we know all about wars between socks.

That is so awesome! It sounds like so much fun - I wish I had time to participate, even though I'm new to knitting and my only completed project has been small squares to donate to my church to be made into a blanket.

Perhaps it could be introduced to Hizbollah and the IDF as a way of relieving tensions

I don't think the point is to win, really, just a fun way to do a knit along / secret pal exchange, both of which are rampant in the online knitting community.

I probably won't sign up, because I just don't have the time to knit that I used to. But it seems like it'd be a lot of fun.

Lily Chin is my girl! Check out the sweater she made for David Letterman while she was a guest on his show!

Oh, here, I'll start another war: Crochet is so much cooler than knitting.

Now, now, DenOfSizer... we are all sisters under the yarn.

(saith me, aka knitgrrl)

In related fibery news, my publisher just posted my new book's website! This one's on spinning...

Anyone want to take me on in a spinning war? I don't do socks...

Wouldn't it be cool if they combined spinning (as in yarn) with spinning (as in those health-fitness-type classes)?
