The internet nerdocracy has inadvertently spawned a DDoS attack against a Hungarian government website set up to name a new bridge. Why? Because Stephen Colbert asked "the heroes" to march, and they obeyed.
(We've heard from this guy before.) Next on their sights: The Saginaw Spirit team mascot.

Clever use of the "On Notice Board Generator" in 3, 2...
(I only say that cuz I'm too lazy to do it myself.)

Sounds pretty premeditated to me.
So you think Stephen Colbert plannned to bring down the site by mentioning it on his show? Because it looked to me like he planned to ridiculously skew the poll results, which is hard to do when the site is down.

What a waste of everyone's time. Petty vandalism as the new entertainment. What the fuck is wrong with Colbert, he's a clever guy and very funny sometimes?

No way this is completely Colbert's fault. I remember trying to log into this site when the Chuck Norris DDoS was going on (last week) and it was on its knees then.
The fault is on the internet vandal in each of us.

Oh no, poor Hungary and their sorry web-page. It's armageddon for Hungary and their stupid bridge. EVERYBODY PANIC!

We got hit by the Colbert effect last week, when he used a screen shot of Kittenwar on his show. Fortunately we've had several hefty waves of publicity prior to this, and the site is now pretty heavily optimised so the server held up okay. If he'd featured us when we started out we would have fallen over completely, though, no doubt about it.
It was the biggest traffic peak we've had so far, an order of magnitude over our baseline levels (which justify a dedicated server), and we're still getting a lot of extra hits. And he didn't even specifically order the heroes to go out and hit the site.
But I don't really think you can blame people for knocking sites over in this way. It's just part of how the internet works, if you're running a public site there's always a risk of this happening, and there are measures you can take against it.

That's great they link to those forum posts from their front page... didn't even realize they had put a forum up, let alone rehauled their site. Now to vote!

No.
At the start of the show, Colbert tells you he's going to explore ways of getting people to vote. Shortly after he subverts the Hungarian website, he goes on to tell you he's doing it for the publicity (and that you can purchase his publicity).
Colbert is very web-savvy. He is an egomaniac (or plays one). His subversion of the media is unparalleled. He truly deserves his PhD in the arts.
Thank goodness he's on our side.

Wait, actually. All joking aside, some people are starting to get upset about this whole thing.
