Not bad, but it would have liked to see Major Tom busting a circuit board.

Way too literal. A green light labeled "engines" flashing doesn't add much to the lyric "engines on".

Needs more mime.

I'm with you, anthill.

I also didn't like the placement of the ground control specialist's eye-nostrils. :(

Yeah, the whole eyeball thing was a real turnoff to me. The eyes are ABOVE the nose. I mean, I liked Picasso and all, but I might not like to see his faces singing at me.

Or, maybe I would...

enhh...kind of bland. I agree, the mouthing of the lyrics sucked. Place there were way too many long shots where barely anything happened. Okay, his spaceship is floating around the earth, I get it.

I liked it and the style. It certainly didn't remove anything from the song.

The 20th century is so over-used.

My mom always said if you have nothing nice to say don't say anything at all. So.

My mom is was pyschopathic. She was really nice on the outside, but she tortured my siblings and me in insidious psychological ways that we did not learn was malevolent until we became an adults.

So, good luck with that.

Also, the 20th century is like herpes.

But I hope not.

I thought it was really cool

I liked it. C'mon. It was a student.

But why was the control room guy talking into a spork?

I much prefer queen zixi's link. That said, there can never be too much David Bowie on Metafilter.

I'm glad you guys are trashing it too.. because hoo boy...

The caption beneath says he did some research. Apparently his research never touched on the fact that rockets do not have flat tops, that they generally are held vertical by gantries until liftoff, or that objects in orbit follow a curved path through space. I can almost forgive the way the ship jumps from the launchpad instead of accellerating up as artistic license... almost. And what was with those crazy yellow mountains?

Good tune though.

Why yes, I have had a rough week. Why do you ask?

Trippy.
Nice work.
Talented guy.

Thanks, ozomatli.

Uh, modernerd... the rocket has a flat top because in the song, he is 'floating in a tin can.'

That's one of my favorite tunes of all time, but embarrassingly I didn't know it was called "space oddity" until today.

Yep, too literal.

However, I do like his illustration style. He seems to be a better illustrator than animator.
posted by empath at 7:31 AM on May 26, 2007

Yeah, he could have been a little more interpretive. I really liked the lift off sequence though, and the shot after with all the control room people jumping up.

Well, it was a good effort. I'm not a fan of the giant nose-head people, but hey.

For those saying it is too literal - well - the song could very well be about a bad trip on drugs and not going into space, so animation to a dude being shot into space isn't literal.

Whoa...trippy.
