Florida Folklife/Zora Neale Hurston

The Florida Memory Project has a great audio section. In addition to podcasts and lots of individual files, they've compiled three mix cds of their offerings (Music from the Florida Folklife Collection, More Music, and Shall We Gather at the River). The real gem of the collection, though, may be the WPA recordings Zora Neale Hurston made while she was collecting folk tales in Florida. (Previous y2karl omnibus folklife post)

Can I add to the records the story that was passed down to me of a 1940's lynched corpse hanging from a cyprus tree for a week at the end the intersection Canal & Roscoe Blvd on the Intracoastal waterfront in Palm Valley, Florida? You might know the location as home of the TPC golf tournament.

Nice post. I have that first collection and just yesterday my office mate was listening to the Shall We Gather at the River disc. That Florida Memory Project is associated with the Florida Archives, who have been doing a nice job getting some their collection online.

Beautiful! This will provide the soundtrack to a solid weekend's worth of working on art.

The bridge is about four miles away from Sawgrass.
