You know, now whenever I see something like this, I can't help thinking of Half Life.

Double?
The site linked to from the old post doesn't work anymore, and it's from 2004 anyway which is getting on for long enough for a revisit. Worth linking to anyway.
Also, I love these photos.

Is it for raw sewage?
No. It's designed to alleviate flooding risks.

considering how fastidiously spotless the Japanese are, god bless them, I'm actually not surprised that even their sewers are cleaner than most cities streets

Wow. As kids we would frequent our local storm sewer system, but that meant crawling for hundreds of feet though 3 foot diameter pipes until you reached my junction room with all the Steve McQueen posters and Playboy centerfolds taped to the walls.
You didn't want to get caught in there during a thunderburst though, that might have been something close to certain death.

There's also the Geo-Site project
"Forty meters under sprawling Tokyo is a tunnel system which houses utility, gas, water, and electricity line. This video [note: annoying music] has some still images of the construction, along with miniature replicas of the huge machines which carved holes in the earth."posted by ericb at 9:16 AM on September 4, 2007

that sh*t is straight out of half-life
Um, I'm pretty sure Half-Life is straight out of that sh*t. Not to be all Mister Over 25, but reality came before virtual reality.

See, with the little storm sewers in New York, we may get some alligators. But these ones pictured here are clearly a perfect breeding ground for much much larger reptiles.
No wonder they fear Godzilla.

I've played dozens of Japanese RPG games and almost all of them have tunnels that resemble the ones pictured.
