Trying to get unemployed youth interested in farming, Pasana O2 boasts a slick website (Japanese only unfortunately), a vision statement, a newsletter and oh yeah, an underground farm covering one square kilometer inside a former bank vault. [Via our very own]
Gorgeous pictures! Thanks for posting.

I just can't see how converting sunlight->some other stored energy->elecricity->light->crops can be more efficient than just growing the crops someplace else and shipping them in. I suspect this could only make any kind of sense in a country with almost no arable land and huge importation tariffs.

Oooh, should've RTFA. They claim that instead of the initial energy being sunlight, it should be geothermal. But it still sounds silly to me. I'd like to see some numbers on efficiency.

asok: Interesting you should mention marijuana - it's mentioned in one of the comments in the article linked at the end.
agentofselection: Yeah that whole part about geo-thermal energy is a bit vague and unconvincing.

Clearly a great money making opportunity if the crop were converted to mj or cocaine, given the prices in Japan.
