"The inversion of this bed counters predetermined representations of a bed."

"The intention is to bring attention to mundane day-to-day tasks like opening a door, flicking on a light switch or flushing a toilet. By presenting the objects that were interacted with throughout the day without context or setting, the banality of these actions is emphasized"

Someone please make her shut up.

Oh, the author is a complete hack. Move along people. Nothing to see here...

Since we have direct links to the Saddest Cat pieces, we can judge them on our own. We do not need to decide what we think of them based on links to her other work of which you disapprove.

Is this supposed to be a commentary on oppressive/abusive relationships? Or some outsider art with an odd sense of humor?

Either way, it's not very interesting.

Also found her drawings reminiscent of Alexander Calder.

When unfunny jokes and comic strips die, they go to a tiny little room in hell where demons with the heads of Jim Davis and Ted Rall use them to jack off to "Everbody Loves Raymond" for all eternity.

Let's hope that when Maria turns 21 this year, she'll no longer have the time to doom these miserable drawings to such a horrible, horrible fate.

Yea, but it had just eaten your cookie. It was totally faking sad to stop you feeling mad at it!

I hadn't watched it for a while and forgot that it makes me cry every time I see it. I usually associate Bruno Bozzetto with laughing my ass off, too, so it sneaks up on me.
posted by louche mustachio at 12:22 PM on March 15, 2009

Well, I liked it. I think it's damned cute and poignant and funny. The drawing style is hilarious applied to the subject matter, as if done from the cat's perspective. And for those of you with an underdeveloped sense of humor: It's funny because cats aren't like that at all. They give fuck-all that you're feeding and sheltering them. This is a sensitive, beholden cat. Hilarious. I would love to see this animated.

As someone who is heavily allergic to cats (but who has nevertheless yearned to own a cat for the past five years or so) these make me sad.

Some of them were funny in a bittersweet sort of way, but at the end of the day it feels like it comes down to a sense of belonging. The boy is such a twat to the cat, but the cat sticks around for the abuse nevertheless. This Christmas strip in particular seems to highlight that.

Or maybe I'm beanplating.

Interesting find.

I wish life was like that one episode of Amazing Stories, where the wheels fall off the plane, and then the guy in the plane draws a picture of the wheels back on the plane, and he thinks about it real hard and the wheels appear on the plane, because I would like to imagine this little boy into existence, walk over to him, and punch him right in the throat.

From what I can tell, the cat is only sad because it has somehow missed the chance to scratch the little boy's eyes out.

Apart from that, I thought the cartoon was great. I look forward to the next installment, "the saddest child" in which Maria Konstantinov weaves her whimsical way with the tale of a small boy treated badly by his sexually aggressive, domineering stepfather. Woo hoo, what fun.

My cat is the saddest cat in the world. Because I am at work and she is at home.

Therefore I am neither petting her or giving her food. She demonstrates this deep soul crushing sorrow by curling up in a ball on the end of the bed, or finding a sunbeam and slowly tracking it across the floor, or even spending an hour or two watching the bird cage or the fish tank. It may seem odd to us, but I suppose that we all grieve in our own personal ways.

Though it's all worth it for when I come home, she shows her overflowing love of me by waiting till I come in the room, and opening one eye about halfway, seeing that I have, in fact, returned and then going back to sleep.

Being in the presence of such incendiary affection is like standing in a blast furnace... of love.
