I know there's more important stuff going on in the world, but my sole reason for visiting the New York Times lately has been this baby. Thanks for the links.

The weird crap nobody would ever wear off the runway.

Is that inspired by Dumb Donald?

Vacuous self indulgent twaddle.

Through some mix of fate and outrageous self-promotion, I managed to finagle an invitation to a show this season- the one night this week I actually had something to do I couldn't put off. Bah! That's what I get for not looking at my calendar. Next season I'm IN, I swear, if I have to scale the tents and rappel in.

Ah, fashion...how I love you! What other endeavour is able to be so totally transfixing yet so unapologetically vacuous and ephemeral all at once? Thanks for the great post.

You did a FPP on NY Fashion Week and didn't include a link to the Fug Girls doing their thing?

They're the only reason I know it's Fashion Week, and they make reading about it bearable, even funny!

Here's a much more realistic take on fashion photography. The comments section contains some great inside baseball.

It's nice the designers are able to give meth addicts some work.

Don't be so hard on them. Think of fashion as the ecological refugium of skinny people, with bizarre plumage and barely sublimated mating rituals. It's not supposed to be normal.

It's more the fact that the fashion industry chooses to exploit these people for those reasons, otherwise why have a "model directory" where you can search by the body part or physical feature the model is known for? Another thing is the industry has in the past 5-7 years or so, gone for a certain homogeneous look in order to further the "model as clothes hanger, do not notice her face" notion. So there's a whole host of Eastern European virtual clones out there on the runway (though this has been changing slightly).

I enjoy fashion, but there are aspects that are up for question, as well as ways to poke fun at that industry's choices.

The fact that so many are that young is a key factor. Besides the more superficial issue of 16 year olds selling clothes to 30 year olds, there's not a little exploitation or pressure happening. A lot of these girls are living a dream and they are making more money than they could've ever imagined, seeing the world, and all that, but there's a lot of damage that can be done. See Crystal Renn, Ali Michael, or more sadly, Ruslana Korshunova, among others.

That said, the frilliness and the fantasy, the creativity on display, and other parts of fashion are fun and the part I enjoy. The whole model as clothes hanger and not human being thing is something I don't; it's dehumanizing. Would also be nice to see a variety of shapes, sizes, ages, and heights out there. Celebrating that fun, creative aspect in a more human, relatable way.

Nice post. :)

I've been wrangling press backstage at various Fashion Week shows for the last 6 days. I'll be very, very happy when it's all over in a day or two.

Also, The Daily is probably an easier source for industry / fashion week news than WWD for the casual reader. Most of the content on WWD is for subscribers only.
