The trick is just to imagine the dotted half-parabola mirrored over where your cursor will be. Draw that imagined half over and then drag up and down and around until it intersects with the basket. No reflexes or long clicks needed. Just spatial reasoning.

I'm confused, what's going on here with the distributions and rankings? I guess the "out of 64" denotes the Metafilter group, than they only show global rankings at the end?

I'm not completely sure that this isn't rigged, or at least there aren't some bots running around. The same people consistently rank the exact same, and I don't recognize their usernames.

I always thought I was bad at shooting baskets because my depth perception was so poor. As it turns out, I'm equally bad at two-dimensional basketball. Thanks, Metafilter, for helping finally put to rest a hypothesis that had been unproven for over thirty years!

Even by cheating — running a dental floss across the screen at basket level so it's easier to judge the parabola — I suck. At best, I'm in the bottom 30%.

Good god, so this is what it feels like to be one of those tea party losers! Worse than almost everyone, and absolutely incapable of being better even when I cheat it. Pathetic!

geoff, they're showing the same scores because the ones shown at the end are the all-time high scores in the MeFi group.

I wish [all time high scores] and [high scores this round] weren't munged together. And if shots are just random the all-time high score list is meaningless anyway.

Yay! I came back to try again and I STILL SUCK!!! And I totally don't get the parabola arc thing either. Good to reinforce those negative thoughts I have about myself from time to time.

It runs way too jerky in fullscreen mode (about two frames per shot), but it won't let me use anything else -- every click sends it right back to it

On my Mac Mini using Opera it runs smooth as silk on a 2048x1152 display. Yes, that is an ungodly resolution. A 23" or 24" Samsung something. Sadly, discontinued.

OK, I got #4 at 204 or something like that, which for me (based on the other games I played, I really do suck at this) is kind of like asking Megan Fox if she wants to go home with me on a dare and having her say yes. So I'm quitting right now.

Sonofagun. I just pulled off #30, better than 95%. I played it that time by going with gut instinct, sometimes hitting shoot before the parabola was drawn. IOW, volume over accuracy.

So apparently missing doesnt count against you, and spending time on short-distance shorts is silly because they're low-score. If you're going to spend an extra moment, do it for a long shot.

Also, dental floss across the screen. Much easier.

It keeps going fullscreen every time I take a shot. I press escape, take another shot, it goes fullscreen again. Repeat.

Glad I'm not the only one frustrated by the 'forces fullscreen' problem. Looks like it runs perfectly playably in the browser window but it won't let me play that way. Bah.

Well, my son and I just killed an hour on this site and being able to rise no further in the ranking declared that it sucked. But if there is a MeFi group, well then, we'll have to give it another try. My son insists that I mention he got as high as 25 out of ~650. Thanks Effigy.

Yes, well, an hour later we didn't manage to crack into the top half of the MeFi group, after being top quartile in the open group. So for all of the self-effacing comments the people here are ready to take on the world.
