Lost my Shokz Open Comms ..do lower-priced models work well for zoom?

I lost my Shokz OpenComm headphones in a recent move and can't afford to replace them with the same model. Do the less-expensive models that are not aimed at "communications" (no noise-cancelling boom mic) work well for zoom calls?

Mostly-metal high-end version of the Itaki electric lunchbox?

I got the Itaki electric lunchbox/bentobox last month thanks to a comment I read here, and as a raging nerurodivergent, it has changed my entire life. It doesn't just warm things up, it fully cooks from raw rice/meat/veggies to a hot, perfect meal, super-fast, just by adding water, plugging it in, and pressing one big satisfying light-up button. It's also cute. I love it so much that I've ended up using it to cook all my meals, at school and work and at home. Is there an all-metal version?

What Was Ethical Consumption Under Capitalism?

Adherence to TINECUC ["there is no ethical consumption under capitalism"] allows organizers to focus on building solidarity between workers or community members rather than buyers, whose common interests may be superficial. It is also, in a world system of production based on exploitation, a factually true statement, insofar as no purchase of anything made with exploited labor has any business branding itself “ethical.” But the unexamined phrase isn’t worth using; before people start attributing TINECUC to Marx or Lenin, we should figure out how Sandinista beans turned into Starbucks — and how anti-consumerist politics fell out of fashion on the American left.

What does romantic attraction feel like to you?

I was a late bloomer and basically did not experience strong romantic attraction growing up. Once I became an adult, I increasingly developed attraction to others, but it still feels hazy and confusing to me. I am curious to hear what others experience to try to clarify my own feelings.

Fanfiction-adjacent books?

Book recs for the new year! I have recently been enjoying a lot of books that riff on fanfiction tropes or just read like really good fanfiction (I will explain properly below the fold). Can anyone recommend more like these?

What are some positive models of people living life without romantic relationships (ideally, asexual+aromantic, or similar identities)? In particular, do you have any tips on "a well-lived single-by-choice life," whether from personal experience, people you're close with, or fictional portrayals?

How to get Omega 3

I’m interested in getting more Omega 3s in my diet. I eat mostly vegetarian, but not very much fish and not a huge fan either. A few things I’ve considered: algae oil supplements, flax and chia seeds, but I have concerns about these and wondered if anyone here could shed some light or give pointers about how you get your Omega 3s?

The Library Workers' Field Guide to Designing and Discovering Restorative Environments

I just defended my dissertation and one of the main offerings is a toolkit of resources for library workers to design and discover restorative environments. Since MeFi is a place full of people who either are librarians, or who love them, I thought it might be a good fit for announcing here.

High drama piano bangers, please

I started this morning with No Children in my head. A great song, if a little dark in lyrical content and therefore not great to listen to on repeat. What I am really after is dramatic, high energy piano. Combined with dramatic guitar strumming is ideal but optional. Aiming more for rock than classical but all suggestions welcome. Tried some Tom Waits but it was too low-energy. Please give me your recommendations!

Any tips for blended (remote/video and live in-person) meetings?

Mejor Que Me Mate Dios

Petrona Martínez, the queen of bullerengue, won a Latin Grammy last year at the age of 82. The 2021 album Ancestras + a review with songs! On the musical legacy of slavery: "The Colombian city of Cartagena was a principal port for trading enslaved people, and many escaped to form Palenque communities of cimarrones across the Caribbean coast." On her first trip (at age 59) and performance in Bogotá: "Her fellow Colombians didn’t know anything about this ancestral music that had been preserved through generations of Black women despite —or perhaps because of— the isolation and invisibility. It wasn’t until she was in her 50s, after working as a domestic worker and a sand collector and becoming a mother of seven, that Petrona was able to record her own music."

Top of the Charts in 1400 BCE

Want to hear (a version of) the world's oldest known complete song? Germanic-Nordic experimental folk collective Heilung have recorded a version of the Hymn to Nikkal, a paean to the Moon Goddess Nikkal which is the only complete piece among the 3,400-year-old Hurrian Songs. The songs were inscribed with both words and musical notation in cuneiform on clay tablets, and were excavated from the ancient Amorite-Canaanite city of Ugarit in northern Syria. Vocalist Maria Franz says "The rhythm in that text is just so weird; it’s so alien. I’ve never heard anything like it.”

Free downloadable binder sewing pattern and tutorial

An ally of the PEI [Prince Edward Island] Binder Project, Canadian clothing company Ureshii is providing a free downloadable binder sewing pattern and tutorial: You may have read before about us offering binders to trans masculine and non-binary community members… We are releasing the pattern for our most sturdy binder for free. We feel that this is a binder [that] is safe and comfortable to wear and not too sweaty. My hope is that those with crafty parents, grandparents, friends, or a diy spirit will have a starting point for making their own safe and affordable binders. This pattern is free and I would encourage people to make binders for others, if you want to sell the binders themselves, go ahead. I hope that you will share the pattern with anyone who asks.

Wording an idea succinctly

I’m writing a book proposal that requires a very brief summary of my book, like a couple sentences. I’m having trouble with that, even after outlining and reverse outlining and bouncing ideas off others. I’m aware that my topic might need refinement, but this is my actual question now: what strategies have you found helpful for condensing big ideas into an elevator speech?

Science Fiction Beach Reads

What options do I have to make a DIY full-face PAPR style face masks?

2021 fire season preparation: full face masks edition. COVID-related masks dominate search functions for good reason, but I am building some full face PAPR style respirators for the family in preparation of the smoke-season that is inevitable here out west (if not this year, some summer soon). I can build 90% of what I need, I'm just having trouble sourcing the actual cover-up-your-faceparts portion of the project. I don't run in cosplay or prop-building circles, so there may be resources there that I'm unaware of? Help me source some weird ass helmets and masks.

Defund the Police? An Abolition Curriculum from the Mennonite Church USA

Defund the Police? An Abolition Curriculum. "In the wake of continued high profile police shootings across the United States, many people in the [Mennonite] church pushed for an Anabaptist-oriented response and resources that helped us to move as a church into solidarity with the pain and brutality being felt and witnessed on Black, brown and Indigenous people. This curriculum is our response...This curriculum is an initial guide for congregations who are desiring to begin or continue their reflection on what it means to engage the forces of state, their commitments to non-violence and how to act to end policing and police brutality."

"It is, by far, the easiest way to write a tune as you can clearly see"

Exuberant composer Guy Michelmore demonstrates how to write a tune using dogs, how to use inversions to improve your chord progressions (featuring an impressively impractical visual aid), how to write music while trapped in the boot of a VW Polo. Or if you you're in a hurry, how about music theory in 16 minutes? Bonus: Guy introduces the people of Britain to Cabbage Patch dolls in 1983.
