What does it mean that hundreds of thousands of players are clicking on a banana? Clicker games are the inevitable end-point of the rise of bots and microtransactions.

How to deal with husband's complaining, unwillingness to help himself?

My husband complains all the time about various aches, pains, and ailments, but doesn't do much to better his health. It's gotten to the point where I find it hard to be supportive. How do I draw boundaries while not being dismissive of real concerns?

What are the minimum reuirements for a casual friendship?

I know that connections always have some elements of imperfection, but I'm struggling to figure out the line between imperfection and lack of platonic compatibility. I don't want to be so picky with friendships that I'm lonely, but I also want to be aligned with the people in my life. Any suggestions for how to determine whether a person is an imperfect connection or one that doesn't meet minimum friendship standards?

How do you come to terms with getting older?

I’m going to be 42 very soon, and am really struggling with it. Turning 40 was hard enough, and now it’s two years behind me. I’ve noticed changes in my body that I don’t like. I’ve always thought of myself as a “young” person and still feel “young” mentally, but I’m shocked at how old I’m actually getting. I know 42 isn’t that old compared to 72 or 82, but my cousin turning 31 this month and my friend turning 29 remind me of how “ancient” I’m becoming.

I'm Basically My Friend's Only Friend, Feels Codependent. Advice?

My friend recently moved from City A to City B, and I haven't been to her new place. I steer clear of City B due mainly to crime and traffic, and have been clear with her about this before she even considered moving there. She told me last night that I'm basically her only friend at this point, and feels neglected because I haven't been able to meet up since starting my new (exhausting and busy) job. She works a few hours per week. I'm not interested in being someone's sole support system when they're capable of forming other relationships but are choosing not to. I feel this is an unhealthy dynamic, and am seeking advice in how to manage the situation.

Reflecting on friend's new boundary

I could use some help and perspective in thinking about a conversational boundary a friend of mine has set. It seems reasonable, but it's a big shift in our friendship and emotional connection, and I am having some feelings about it all and trying to figure out if it's worth a conversation or something I need to instead process on my own and with my therapist.

How important is sexual attraction to your partner?

I (32F) have broken up with my lovely boyfriend of almost two years. On paper, we were perfect together. He had all of the qualities I could ask for in a partner (kind, generous, motivated, intelligent, handsome, empathetic).

Monotropism: single attention and associated cognition in autism

“Me and monotropism : a unified theory of autism,” suggests that attentional differences explain not only the diagnostic criteria for autism, but better yet, they explain the internal phenomenology: inertia, sensory and social overload and insensitivity, stimming, and particularly hyperfocus and intense interest.

Test yourself here.

Long Term Care Insurance calculator?

Does anyone know of an online calculator that can do NPV/FV-stye calculations for long term care insurance? I'm helping a neighbor sort out their finances a bit, and while I can do the math myself I would prefer it if there was somewhere I can point them online, so that any "recommendation" isn't coming directly from me and I'm not the one making any assumptions about anything ever.

Scheduled online fitness classes that are NOT yoga or gym-culture

Looking for recs to either individual teachers, studios or directories for livestreamed classes that you have to register and preferably pay for. Not on-demand because I will never demand a fitness class when the sofa is right there, please. I've searched Mindbody, google and reddit, and while I can find this for yoga, HITT, etc, what I really want is functional fitness or something low-key and not 'yay I lost ten pounds, look at my massive muscles, no pain no gain' sort of ethos.

Navigating Child Safety in Roblox: Help Me!

I'm concerned about my 10 year old daughter's safety on Roblox and need some advice. How do I guard her safety, especially when existing safeguards like the 'no chat' feature are circumvented via "signs" that people write and hold up in the game? What other measure can I take? She's already blocked from chatting and spending IRL money. Also, I just need an over-anxious-parent reality check.

Is there a book/resource you keep revisiting to help be your best self?

I’ve been reading the book “The 15 Commitments of Conscious Leadership”. It’s a mix of things I like and things I don’t. What feels very appealing to me is: It presents a pretty compelling set of principles which seem like they could be really helpful in just about any situation to help decide how to respond in a way aligned with your values. I’m curious if folks have books that do that for them?

Give me your best neurodivergent friendly cleaning tips and resources

I have A(u)DHD and I sometimes struggle with cleaning. I live in a tiny studio apartment with a kitchenette and tiny bathroom, so less space to clean but more overwhelm and visual clutter as there isn't a break from the chaos anywhere I look. I'm having surgery in a few weeks and I want to deep clean and tidy the whole place in preparation (partly because my partner will be looking after me while I recover and he's disabled and can't do much housework). I've been trying every day for a week to clean up and it somehow seems worse than it was when I started every time and is now completely overwhelming. I'm a big fan of the Unfuck Your Habitat 20/10 method, but that doesn't seem to be cutting it right now for some reason. A collection of other neurodivergent friendly tips and tricks, motivation hacks would be useful.

Can you recommend a laundry pick-up service in Chicago?

The laundromat in my neighborhood that did pickup/drop-off burned down. :( Then the next service I tried, Bolt, gave me back a bunch of stuff that wasn't mine and didn't pick it up to return to its rightful owners. :( :( Are there specific services you recommend that will do residential laundry pickup in Logan Square? (The pickup part is essential; not looking to drop my stuff off somewhere myself.)

Turbocharging the energy transition

The New Climate Law Is Working. Clean Energy Investments Are Soaring. "It seems clear already that the law will stimulate significantly more investment in clean energy than was at first thought possible while generating more revenue from high-income taxpayers to reduce the deficit. ... Companies have announced at least 31 new battery manufacturing projects in the United States. ... The pipeline of battery plants amounts to 1,000 gigawatt-hours per year by 2030 — 18 times the energy storage capacity in 2021, enough to support the manufacture of 10 million to 13 million electric vehicles per year. In energy production, companies have announced 96 gigawatts of new clean power over the past eight months, which is more than the total investment in clean power plants from 2017 to 2021 and enough to power nearly 20 million homes."

Decrapifying Youtube

If you hate how Youtube's home page is lately full of clickbait thumbnails and titles desperate for you to load them, you might want to take a look at DeArrow, written by Ajay Ramachandran (Chrome, Firefox), an extension that can replace them with crowdsourced alternatives, or in their absence provide de-emphasized titles and random thumbnails. Ramachandran also produces SponsorBlock (Chrome, Firefox), a crowdsourced system for skipping past the sponsorship ads in videos, as well as the non-music portions of music videos.

how to make positive, supportive conversation

I am noticing (through ongoing therapy, medication, meditation, and more--these types of general, adjacent advice aren't helpful for this question) that friendly conversation skills like responding positively, giving compliments, and offering support do not come naturally to me. Netflix Neutrality

Verizon and Cogent Communications are at odds over how much money needs to change hands to deliver decent Netflix performance. Verizon has developed a rival to Netflix, Redbox and have been accused of tinkering with Netflix and AWS speeds due to the recent FCC Net Neutrality ruling. Things may change again, but then again, maybe not really.

In just eight years, Jornet has won more than 80 races, claimed some 16 titles and set at least a dozen speed records, many of them in distances that would require the rest of us to purchase an airplane ticket. Grow More GM, says former anti-GMO activist

Mark Lynas, author of several books on climate change and once a leading figurehead of the anti-GMO movement, has made an about turn on his opinions regarding GM crops. In an address to the Oxford Farming Conference, he stated: "For the record, here and upfront, I apologise for having spent several years ripping up GM crops. I am also sorry that I helped to start the anti-GM movement back in the mid 1990s, and that I thereby assisted in demonising an important technological option which can be used to benefit the environment. As an environmentalist, and someone who believes that everyone in this world has a right to a healthy and nutritious diet of their choosing, I could not have chosen a more counter-productive path. I now regret it completely. So I guess you’ll be wondering—what happened between 1995 and now that made me not only change my mind but come here and admit it? Well, the answer is fairly simple: I discovered science, and in the process I hope I became a better environmentalist."

Fracking the facts

Described as the path to a new golden age of energy, hydraulic fracturing, or 'fracking' is marketed as an economical, safe, and environmentally sustainable method. An investigation by the NY Times may suggest otherwise. Meanwhile, people throughout the country are faced with the prospect of drilling in their back yards. What are small communities to do? Ask the BLM to withdraw the leasing or perhaps just be ignored. Maybe its time to map the fight.

Extreme climate predictions the most accurate

A new study in which researchers have compared the last 10 years of actual climate data with the world's most sophisticated climate simulations and found the models predicting the most extreme global warming have been the most accurate in predicting the actual climate over the last 10 years. That means if those models continue to hold true, the world could be in for a devastating worst case of 4 to 6 degrees C by 2100. There are scientists who lay out the logic why human civilization could not survive. "If you have got a population of 9 billion by 2050 and you hit 4 degrees, 5 degrees or 6 degrees, you might have half a billion people surviving." (Previously; via)
