I believe that the family is one of the most important factors in child development... but not this family. I bet she was driving a Ford Excursion while talking on her cell phone, navigation with her GPS, drinking her Starbucks coffee.

That's just a sad, sad example of a parent who evidently might have occasionally asked her son about his life and activities, but couldn't be bothered to actually listen to what he said...

the irony of the situation seems lost on the writer of the article who just mentions how much the trip cost.

no mother that would spend $220 to deliver her kid his gameboy would be caught dead
with her son playing a black&white gameboy. :)

did it ever occur to the drunken woman that you could get TWO of the new Gameboys for less than $220, im sure she slipped the lad a Visa card for such little emergencies.

OK, most British phrasery I can muddle through using my Monty Python "Guide to Weird Shit You Hear Englishmen Say," but this one has me stumped. Holgate, what the HELL does this mean??

I think in the US we'd say:
"gave him a hard time"
(pretty close to that?)

UncleFes, google comes up with this definition of 'take the piss', but of course you already knew that (wink wink).

If she didn't care about her son as someone said ("not listening when he told her of his life"), then she wouldn't have bothered! I think it is obvious that she loves her son, but her priorities are mixed up. Would any sane person travel 1300 kilometres to deliver a GameBoy? Obviously not. Just shows she has nothing to do, but loves her son to death.

I dunno. If she can afford it, and she felt responsible for mispacking it after he had already packed everything the way he wanted to, I don't see a problem. Shows a commitment to putting your mistakes right.
