Now is probably a poor time to start making bomb jokes at the airport.
What is it with Australians and bomb jokes? Is it a form of greeting in that country?

It reminds me after Columbine, some schools around the area were closed when kids had a test or just didn't want to go into school. The kids just called in a bomb threat. After about 5 times they stopped canceling school and just barricading it with guards.

It's just the way they are. Australians are quirky, just like their cinema.

Sinan Safet Acar doesn't sound like an aussie name. that makes me wonder, would a John Smith have been arrested for the same joke?

Kids will be kids. When I was attending the International School in Manila (1979-80), we started getting frequent bomb threats called in from "Commander X of the Iranian Revolutionary Service" (this was during the hostage crisis, remember). The first couple times they sent us home; later, just out into the parking lot for 20 minutes or so.

As of a day or so ago, it is no longer a misdemenor to call in a fake bomb threat in the state of New York. It is now a "violent felony," for which you can get up to seven years in prison. I presume similar laws will start getting passed across the country pretty soon. If you have kids that "will be kids," you might want to point this out to them, unless you want them to end up in a detention facility until they turn 21.

About a month ago i flew from Brisbane to Sydney in Australia and one of the people i was with put the last bag to be checked in, on top and said "That is the one with the bomb in it."
The lady behind the counter lost her smile immediately and responded with "I wish you didn't say that. I 'm going to have to report this to my supervisor."
After frantically apologising and showing her the contents of that back, we came to the agreement that he said blouse not bomb.

People react to these types of checks in different ways, and humor is one of them. Unfortunately, it also has dangerous implications.
I remember getting in trouble a few years ago when I laughed openly at the security sign in the airport that had a cartoonish icon of a "bomb" with the red "no" symbol over it-- like, instead of "No Smoking," "No Bombing." ...Mom and Dad really gave me a big lecture that time.
Pretty soon even having the wrong emotion will turn you into a suspect.
