Although I'm a believer in the right to bear arms(with reservations), I have this sinking feeling that if the price was right, Beretta would be happy to sell you a gun emblazoned with the Afghan flag.

Yeah, it's tacky, but no more so than all of the marketing b.s. we've been handed since 9/11 from Giuliani endorsing tourism to GM trying to sell you SUVs at zero percent financing.

Don't forget to wave your cheap plastic Chinese made American flag!

Doesn't bother me. Tell the sheep what to buy and they'll buy it.

Yaaaaah, right, like having a personal-defense weapon handy is really going to help fight terrorism. Statistically you're more likely to blow your damn foot off with one of these things. And I'm a gun owner, by the way.

I also think it's stupid.

They're 9mm guns. Everyone knows that 9mm doesn't pack much punch..

Atleast a .45 has "stopping power".

"In every respect, these new Homeland Security Model shotguns are up to the demanding tasks which lay before us as a nation. "

bwahahahahah! I needed a good laugh before heading out for the evening. That's a riot.

"This pistol is testimony that the American spirit will not be diminished during this national crisis."

oh... that's rich! wow.

At least Beretta is donating a portion of the proceeds to the NYPD Foundation and the Suvivor's Fund of the National Capital Region.

If we don't all go out and buy these things, it'll mean that the terrorists win, you know.

Bah! Rednecks have already carved an 'Merican flag next to their "rebel's forever" insignia on their rifles already, what good is this going to do?

If I'd been in the World Trade Center, I wish I'd had one of these guns so I could shoot the terrorists.

There'd be only one chance, you know, but I'd be ready.

Well, that chance is gone, now you need one to shoot the anthrax!

*BANG* dead anthrax!

not when the target is swaddled in kevlar, anyway. otherwise (unless you're dealing with someone ODing on PCP) the 9mm is quite capable of stopping anyone.

(re: phalkin's link to safetyslug.com)

Yeah, those Glaser safety slugs sure are neat. A couple of years ago, my dumbass, redneck boss (of whom I was very fond) accidentally shot himself in the hand (very nearly shooting me in the process). Since the gun was loaded with a "safety slug", (the slugs explode when they hit a target) what would have been a relatively minor wound (with a normal bullet) was turned into a critical one. Ever tried to get "exploded hand" out of office carpet? It ain't no kind of fun.

P.S. He eventually died from complications related to the injury. I love guns.

The vanity of thinking that you can defend your home from trained international terrorists with an Ithaca 20-gauge is only matched by the vanity of thinking that they would want to attack your house.

Even so, I imagine that while you're enjoying the smooth, 100% guaranteed American Made pump-action on that bad boy, they would be lighting the room up with second-hand Red Army Kalashnikovs.

Isn't this a bit facetious? The "safety" in a safety slug is in that it will not penetrate walls, windows, doors or even thick plant cover thus making it safer for innocent bystanders. It was NOT designed to be safe for anyone directly struck by it.

Oh yeah, last time I checked shooting one's self in the hand is stupid, careless and clumsy. The only one who could have avoided any of these things is the individual in question. I don't mean to make light of this man's plight and eventual fate but blaming anyone or anything other than him is irresponsible and ignorant.

Why those of us who handle guns on a regular basis and have done so for decades without incident should be impacted by the carelessness of others is beyond me.

Anywho, I'll toss in an on topic comment here also! I truly think this type of advertising is irresponsible and tasteless - just like all of the auto manufacturers and others who have jumped on the bandwagon with "patriotic" ads. I don't want people to buy guns because it gives them some illusory sense of security - that is ignorant and dangerous and only places guns in the hands of people who are generally unfamiliar with their use and safety precautions. How people equate owning a gun with a sense of security in light of the 9/11 tragedy is mind boggling! Gun ownership would not have altered the events of that day in any way or changed anyone's fate - so what's the motive?

Phalkin linked the Glaser site as an example of a way to accentuate the 9MM's stopping power. The point of my comment is that it does a whole hell of a lot more than stop. It explodes when it comes into contact with the target. If that target is a fleshy one, it makes a big, bloody mess.

They market the "exploding slug" action as a way to reduce collateral damage, but it is widely known that an "undocumented feature" of the bullet is the nastiness of the wounds that it inflicts. (And it pretty much guarantees that the surgeon is gonna have a hell of a time getting all the fragments out). Having seen this bullet in action, the phase "stopping power" just don't cut the proverbial mustard. May I suggest "turning-perfectly-good-body-parts-into-hamburger" power?

Strikes me as odd that conventional exploding ammo has been illegal for years, but these things, which have a similar effect on flesh and bone, are perfectly kosher.

One more time where legislation directed against the hardware involved in crime has done diddley. Maybe if we focused a heck of a lot more effort on punishing criminals and treating the root causes of violent crime instead of the symptoms we'd be a whole lot more succesful.

It's still cold, hard fact that the bullet has no power to be a destructive force on it's own - it takes human intervention. Modifying the motivations of the human element is the only true method of preventing these problems. Unfortunately, that is a long term activity and not something we can accomplish with a few committee meetings, an ad campaign, some useless legislation and some catch phrases for the six o'clock news. The sort of things that give us a "feel good" in our hearts and still let us not deal with the true realities of the situation...
