In Greece, a military officer decapitates (article in greek - english) 5 puppies, using an axe. Just like that. The jury reached a verdict, yesterday: he will face imprisonment for up to 6 months, while the two soldiers who tried to stop him may go to jail for 5 years! I'm just wondering, what would the verdict be if this happened in the US? And how solid is the legislation regarding animal abusement, in general?

any explanation for why this was done? and why two others tried to stop the guy?

personally, it doesn't bother me if they were tried for insubordination and got more time than the dog killer did.

I can think of excellent reasons* for killing dogs, but the method here was a bit brutal. Where did the dogs come from? What were they doing on a military base?

Are we sure that the photo is actually of the incident in question? Those dogs don't look very decapitated. Plus, there are more than five.

Note: the image accompanying the article has nothing to do with the case. Just an image with some dogs.

I know the translated article is a bit unreadable, but I think that you can get the facts by reading it.

I agree that feral dogs should be sterilized but let me point out that it's not the dogs' (or cats for that matter, feral cats are a problem too) fault that the domesticated animal population is out of control. It's our fault, humans fault, for being irresponsible to begin with. Shooting animals because they're a nuisance just isn't acceptable to me. If the only way to eliviate the problem is to euthanize, then fine. But at least have the decency to do so humanely.

Just to clear a coupla things out: this guy was a reserve officer, not a full-time one (similar to a ROTCie, serving in the regular Army for a fixer period of time). Also, dogs are very common in Greek Army bases; mainly as 'pets' for the soldiers. They do tend to run in packs, so in large numbers, they are a bit scary; now, decapitating 5 puppies is despicable to say the least...

If that's an itch, I hear slaughterhouses can scratch it. Also consult DSM-IV regarding childhood conditions.
