And yes, I know, this is a double post. I posted the original. But the site just finished major reconstruction and added loads of new features, and is my favorite (non-porn) website.

I agree. Out of all the Ban Mapping Projects out there, this is The Ban Mapping Project of them all. One more question: If you enter a virtual tomb, are you subject to a virtual curse?

Some people have an odd definition of best. Despite the absolutely significant difference in quality of presentation, sites like Google, CNN, and Yahoo! seem to me to rank higher on any list of best sites.

I have to weigh in with the minority on this one. The Best Site on the Web? Best Site for Egyptologists, perhaps, but as one whose interests range far and wide but somehow not to Ancient Egypt, I'll have to agree with Billsaythis: some people have a funny idea of what the word "best" means.

Not just pretty to look at and well implemented, but very well thought out from an information design (in the Tuftean sense) perspective, as well. Must have taken a lot of planning and thought.

Makes me wish for an employer who's prepared to pay for this kind of quality.

Becoming an Egyptologist. 8 years to get a PhD plus 4 to 5 languages including Arabic, German, French etc.. and then if your lucky, you get to dig a hole in the ground and find pottery. Id rather take my chances finding pre-clovis artifacts in my back yard.

All "best site ever" posts rank right up there with comic book guy's "worst episode ever" nonsense on The Simpsons. In fact, I get a hell of a lot of bullshit spam every day that says "best [blank] ever", so pardon me for being annoyed at your pandering and pimping. The fact that you are proud of your double posting makes me like you even less.
