It sure is nice to have Don and Mike back for the drive home in DC.

If only Howard Stern would get what he deserved....

or, uh, what he deserves

If links from the drudge report are to be reused, it should at least be done before they rotate off the main page.
This didn't seem like much of a story to begin with -- the "deserved" bit implies a grudge/conflict that the article doesn't support. Stern said O&A put the station at legal risk, and he's probably right.

I really think Stern's sporting a double standard. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think he's exactly squeaky clean when it comes to the FCC, either.

Does this even matter? Stern's star has faded, and now that we're so saturated in calculated "wackiness", all I can say is "eh." That, and I'm just mad that Dee Snider got cancelled...now all Richmond has in the morning is John Boy and Billy and NPR.

Here's an idea: play some freaking music, good, rockin' music for the morning drive. Any radio pros out there that know why nobody does this? I mean, a steady stream of Ramones, Motorhead, Lee Perry, anything that make you smile and turn it up for two hours would kill the yammering competition.

I am so glad these guys got offed. Not that I'm above low-brow, not by a long shot. Its just, that they irked me in the way all radio DJs irk me, parading no-class as something admirable and "hip".

Looks like the only one who lost the most in this whole deal is G Gordon Liddy.

This Stern fan thinks he jumped the shark, even if none of his imitators have managed to improve on his concept of entertainment.
(Hey it can happen Donahue, it could [still] happen to Stern)

It seems to me that Stern's genius was to keep it all about his personality while all his imitators are stunt drivers.

A media professor of mine summed up the history of radio thusly: Radio was once the primary medium in the country, then television came along, and so radio just started playing music until they though of a better way to compete with television—and they haven't found it yet.

The large problem in radio is that the antics of folks like Opie and Anthony is its idea of taking chances. I personally like Howard and think his show has more to offer than lesbians and doodie jokes—that man knows how to create drama—but it is certainly a far cry from when theatre played itself out in the airwaves.

I'm with Chinese_Fashion, play some friggin' music already, but play something interesting, not just the chart-toppers. I want to hear musicians I've not heard before, interesting music from other cultures and other parts of the country. Let's have Zydeco Tuesdays and play regional talent from 4-6 p.m. Set up a regular venue in the studio and encourage acts to come in and play live. Stop using canned format, develop something new and interesting, and allowing yourself to be ruled by ratings. Do these things, radio, and become relevant again. Please, please, please...

Howard to Opie/Anthony = Pot to Kettle
Pot says to Kettle, "You are black!"
Kettle says, "You are nasty, crusty and full of beans!"

Interestingly (at least to me), the greatest indictment of today's radio is in "Grand Theft Auto III". The same generic tunes over and over or call in shows where uneducated slobs are alternately pandered to or condescendingly rebutted. At least in GTA3 you can take out your frustration on a few cops or passers by. I miss Dan Barreiro back in Minneapolis. I haven't figured out what to listen to in Boston, yet.

Um, what does Howard Stern deserve? Have you ever listened to the show or are you making an assumption that it's all about lesbians kissing. The guy works on the air for about 5 hours a day. He consistently comes up with new skits, of which are now copied by many "accepted" programs.

Almost every late night talk show has its own stuttering John now.

There was a tv game show that would ask bums or models trivia questions and contestants would bet if they answered them correct or not. This is a blatant lift of a skit on Howard's show.

It was the first to have celebrity boxing (not that this is a good thing)

Most popular radio stations have a Howard Stern imitator.

I really don't understand why everyone calls that show low brow. If you've ever listened to it then you would know that they discuss current events an produce educated opinions about them. Howard then brings out guests and tries to find out inner sexual fantasies and experiences from them. When he interviews them its no holds barred as opposed to the fake banter you hear on jay or dave. The show is the realist thing on tv or radio in my opinion. If you listened to it then you would know what I meant.

Yes, I listened to Howard Stern. His show arrived on the air here in Canada to great fanfare. It was semi-entertaining for about a month.
Then people stopped listening. It limped on for another six or eight months until...
It got canned. Now it has been replaced with rocking tunes in the morning, which, chinese_fashion, does indeed blow away the competition. (No Lee Perry though...it's all AC/DC, Motorhead, Ramones.)
I am very tired of people telling me that because I don't like Howard Stern, I must not be smart enough to understand him. I think I do understand him. I think he is an unimaginative hack.

Oh, wait:

Sorry, I didn't mean to belittle him. I wasn't aware his life was so difficult...

Minneapolis radio was fabulous, at least for the brief period when Rev105 was on the air.
Boston radio is not really worth indulging most of the time; many days I plug a CD player into the tapedeck, and dread the winter months when the tape adapter thingy starts to lock up from the cold.

Try tuning below 92 on the dial some morning (making sure to avoid 'BUR or 'GBH if you're looking for cutting edge).

Actually, the tape player works, it's the fake tape that the CD hookup uses that has issues. As the weather turns colder, it begins to squeak; this is followed by several weeks in which it moans. Eventually, it will repeatedly trigger the auto-reverse detection or eject itself.
Holding it in front of the hot air vent for a few minutes usually cures the problem. I'll probably go out in search of a replacement before too long, though.
I'll check out the sub-92 stuff, agaffin.

This sounds rude....
Seriously though, I've gone through three of those fake tape things in two years. Cold kills them.

Off Topic:

Tingley and Fabulon7, I used to use a radio transmitter when I didn't have a tape player. You tune your radio to the corresponding signal from your discman, but you have to get a transmitter with an adjustable signal if your local radio spectrum is saturated. Mine had only two choices, and they were both exactly on preacher stations on the dial. If you get one like that, at least check to see if any stations are there first. In other cities it worked very well though.

"You are nasty, crusty and full of beans!"

But that's what I like about Howard, Lynsey.

mblandi: streetcars--that was my problem with those. The overhead wires interfered and made everything fuzzier than it was suppose to be. I eventually solved the problem by getting a cd player.

[also Off Topic]

Tingley and Fabulon7: i also used to have this problem (i finally broke down and just bought a new stereo) but one trick i did have some luck with was cracking the tape unit open and removing the wheels inside.

The problem with this is that they are in there to keep the auto reverse from kicking in, and by removing the wheels you effectively make it only work in one direction. The long and short of this is that you may end up having to insert the tape backwards (the wire end going in first), but i never had a problem making that work.

Without the wheels there are no moving parts inside for the cold to affect.
