Love those open instant messaging standards.
Rather than use their own servers or a decentralized approach, Aimster offers peer to peer file sharing services by using the existing AOL and Microsoft Networking infrastructures.
Haven't downloaded nor looked into it too much, but the press release sure sounds like someone's being a silly dilly and wanting lots of money.
"patent-pending integration technology"?
"intelligent switching technology"? It's just utilising other products servers, and it claims that it can not be blocked, which doesn't seem likely (any of those companies can rewrite their server/client system completely) those claims sounds a wee bit exaggerated.

I like Jabber myself... It's open as heck, XML based, and can let you communicate with AIM, MSN, Yahoo, and ICQ clients... as well as Jabber's own protocol. Whee...

AOL is in contacts with its legal department in order to have AIMSTER closed. Just in case you thought, things would continue to be good ...
