CHAPTER 209A. ABUSE PREVENTION Did you know that someone can just go into the courts and say that you are abusive and have threatened physical violence and if they are lying, there is no consequence to them? It was news to me. I have lost custody of my kids and can't even talk to them and I still don't know what I am supposed to have done. I supposedly threatend my ex-wife and caused her to be in fear of "imminent serious physical harm" while I was 200 miles away. I am not that strong! (Nor did I ever threaten violence. I have never been violent.) That is not how America is supposed to work. Fortunately, I got a good lawyer and I have hope of a good resolution. I also found some online resource for dealing with this: Defending gainst a Chapter 209A restraining order. The worst part is that my lawyer tells me that judges do not go after women who have perjured themselves.

Bush's threat to veto stem cell funding is a joke. Scott Rosenberg says flat out why Bush's threat is shamelessly amoral and hyporcritical, and purely political in nature. (via)

50 Albums that changed music. Fifty years old this month, the album chart has tracked the history of pop. But only a select few records have actually altered the course of music.

Most of us saw The Wizard of Oz when we were kids, and discovered Dark Side of the Moon in high school. At some point someone decided to combine the two, and we ended up with the Dark Side of Oz (or Dark Side of the Rainbow). To set this up at home, you needed to start the album just as the MGM lion roared for the third time. Or you could watch it on Turner Classic Movies (who showed the film synched with DSotM in 2000). And now you can watch it on Google Video, while it lasts. My favorite part is when Dorothy walks out into the colors of Oz just as the cash registers of Money kick in.

A new kind of hate has come to Provincetown. The victims? Not who you'd think. "Police say they logged numerous complaints of straight people being called ``breeders" by gays over the July Fourth holiday weekend." People call the police over this kind of thing?

kama3d ~ Made by an anonymous French artist, this series of sculptures of kama sutra positions was supposedly exhibited at the Chambéry Modern Art Museum (Musée d'Art et d'Histoire) recently. Now you can virtually walk around them. Reminscent of that sculpture of Britney giving birth on a bearskin. But are they real? *NSFW* (Note: FLASH)

Report from the Committee on Government Reform Minority Office: Under the Bush Administration, the “shadow government” of private companies working under federal contract has exploded in size. Between 2000 and 2005, procurement spending increased by over $175 billion dollars, making federal contracts the fastest growing component of federal discretionary spending. ... Federal spending on Halliburton contracts increased over 600% between 2000 and 2005. If you're short on time, read the one-page summary of the report, or just hit the database of problem contracts.

Martin and Elizabeth set up housekeeping on the banks of Troublesome and began a family. Of their seven children, four were reported to be blue.

For those unfamiliar with the story of Martin Fugate & his descendents, the 1982 article from Science magazine entitled "The Blue People of Troublesome Creek" is a fascinating read; a recessive gene & decades of inbreeding lead to a clan of Kentucky hill folk with deep blue skin from head to toe.

The U.S. Supreme Court has just ruled President Bush overstepped his authority in creating military war crimes trials for Guantanamo Bay detainees. The 5-3 vote (Roberts recused himself) found the "military commissions" illegal under both military justice law and the Geneva Convention. More from SCOTUSblog.

Bush Incompetent? Think again. I know this is a one link post, I'm afraid that I still haven't mastered the art of adding extra links, and I apologise because it is also from a partisan source. However it raises some points that I think are worth discussing, such as, is calling Bush incompetent not playing right into the hands of all those who kind of like his folksy, laidback ways, and who kind of identify with his fumbling style? Anyway, read this and see the results of this incompetence you might want to think again.

WMDs? Sorry if this is double post or newsfilter, but fox news is claiming that WMDs were found in Iraq. Is it ethical to state as truth that which was been unconfirmed by anyone but one person? Depending on how this pans out, this could continue the shift of approval that started last week.

You may have known that Congressman Lynn Westmoreland (GA) has been a crusader for many great causes, such as HB 145, HB 180, HB 425, HB 500 and HB 637. However you may not have know that he has a second love. Which shines some light on why he has chosen to use his extensive knowledge and experience to co-sponsor H.Con.Res. 11 and H.Con.Res. 12. After listening to him explain why these two resolutions are so critical, I was almost swayed.

[NewsFilter] "Beginning of the End." The death of al Zarqawi, in itself, may have been a bit of a pyrrhic victory, but the latest news is a "treasure trove" of intelligence from al Qa'ida in Iraq. Of course, al Qa'ida in Iraq is largely an open source movement, so they never kept this exactly secret--but now, it's being widely reported that al Qa'ida "sought war between US and Iran." With speculation that al Zaraqwi's death may lead to a drawdown of U.S. troops from Iraq, might his death now also defuse tensions with Iran, as well? Did we end two wars in one blow?
