I was not prepared for that

13 prepared guitar videos. A prepared guitar is a guitar that has been modified with various objects (such as alligator clips or chopsticks) in order to change the sounds it produces. Here are videos from thirteen different musicians who use prepared guitars (including Keith Rowe and Fred Frith).

There's a good essay to be written on the semiotics of prepared guitar in relation to electric guitar in rock.

Never heard of Janet Feder before, but holy crap is she amazing. Great post.

This is a nice compilation, thanks!

It's maybe stretching the definition a bit, but Pat Metheny's Orchestrion has to be the most prepared guitar ever.

Aaaw, no Sonic Youth? The band that when their gear was stolen had to change their whole sound?

(I have done my experiments preparing guitars, but could rarely get any result interesting enough to sample and add to a composition)

Found this somewhat interesting.

But didn't really like the music much.

See, this is what happens when you have too much time between gigs.

And it's totally appropriate. After all, the guitar is what happened when some long-forgotten musician tired of his log-drum, and tied piece of rabbit gut to a stick. Of course he had to go through his banjo phase before his musical sensibilities were sufficiently developed to appreciate the concept of guitar. But it was copper wire that really made the difference. Without copper wire we'd never have heard of SRV or Eric Clapton. Or Jimi. Okay, shrooms, but I'm just saying.

Doing something like this could easily lead to increased time between gigs.

I love prepared guitar, the likes of Frith, Rowe, Kaiser and the rest, so I'm happy to see this here. Thank you.

This is awesome. Also, there appears to be a lot more where this came from!

I'm not sure if this really qualifies but Lee Ranaldo has some pretty awesome prepared guitar work

Funny, I feel the opposite, ilama. I find Ranaldo's guitar work (and Moore's) totally uninteresting. Rowe (or Kevin Drumm!) on the other hand...
