Good Christ. If that's not a sign that we're THIS close to the end of civilization than I dunno what is.

Being a Queen fan, even I am dubious of the product that will end up being staged. Reminds me of Styx's Kilroy Was Here.....

Check out the picture
"...a futuristic musical about a world where globalization rules -- everyone watches the same movies, wears the same clothes and listens to computerized music." Along the lines of "...Matrix meets the Arthurian legend meets Terminator 2."
Pure genuis.

I want DeNiro to play Freddie.

I wonder how long Brian May has had the same haircut. years? decades? centuries? millenia?

This could work...but I can remember what happened last time Queen scored something. *shudder*

I bet "Radio Ga Ga" is used to free the people. This sounds like an extended musical based on the "Radio Ga Ga" video. Throw "I Want To Break Free" & "We Will Rock You" in there and you've already got 15 minutes of the show.

I will pay any amount deemed necessary to see De Niro sing "Fat Bottomed Girls."

jonmc-the Flash Gordon soundtrack was quality stuff.
riffola-add "Show Must Go On" to that list.

I see this whole wave of musicals based on the greatest hits of certain bands and artists. Mommia Mia kicked it off, I believe one is being made from Bruce Springsteen songs, and now Queen. What other bands should have their greatest hits turned into musicals?

I'm pretty sure this was the last time Queen scored something.

This sounds like one scary musical, I wonder how it will compare with Yes/Rick Wakemen's 1970's King Arthur on Ice! ?

Sweet good christ, it sounds like BIM music from 'The Apple', a notorious 1980 stinker, conceived and written by the normally astute and cool George Clinton. I am both apprehensive and eager, since 'The Apple' was an abomination that I could not restrain myself from viewing over and over and over and over....

jonmc: the score to flash gordon is excellent and sounds even better outside the context of the film. one track - "the kiss" - sounds like nothing you've ever heard.
malphigian: the score to highlander is one of the saving graces of an otherwise forgettable b-movie.

oh, and brian may rocks. yeah. i said it and i'm stickin' to it.

wait, wait, wait.... DeNiro sings?

(Of course, who's going to tell him he can't?)

There is a photo somewhere (I think it's in some sort of May biography) of a young Brian with...short hair. Holding the legendary "Red Special" guitar. Oh yes. Whether that was taken centuries ago is difficult to tell.
And even though I had all the Queen albums before albums by other artists I still think that this sounds as though it's going to suck (though on the grandest possible scale).

What exactly is Ben Elton up to? Lloyd Webber and now this. The plot to this show - it's 2112, isn't it?

Can we have a heated Queen vs Rush argument, oh can we, can we?

I love Queen, but ever since Brian May and Roger Taylor teamed up with 5ive to do a boy band version of We Will Rock You I've felt they should just sit back and live quietly off the royalties.

Queen died the day Freddie did, and no amount of collaborations or musicals will change that.

Dude, that's not EVEN an argument. Queen WILL rock you!

Hey, werd7 and grabbing sand, don't get me wrong, I love Queen, I just happened to catch Flash Gordon on cable the other night and was amazed at how poorly it had aged from when I saw it at age 10 in the theatre.

Can we have a heated Queen vs Rush argument, oh can we, can we?

Tough call gangrousier, Rush had the better drummer, but Queen had the better singer(hell, they had a singer). And Freddie had better style...I mean can you picture Geddy Lee in that silver outfit and black nailpolish from the "Bohemian Rhapsody" video....

Queen's pretty abysmal, in my opinion, but I must confess I have a soft spot in my heart for the Flash Gordon soundtrack. Hard to figure out why.

It would appear that Robert DeNiro has lost his friggin' mind.

Oh and jonmc: there's redemption for the Flash Gordon movie. Same director threw this together 18 years later, and it's the best film I've seen in the last five years.

Queen: WE WILL, WE WILL ROCK YOU
Rush: Either admit that you're feminazis, or prove that Billary didn't kill Vince Foster.

I'm with crustygeek on this one, it sounds terrible.

I'm with you on "Croupier," rocketman. Excellent film. On the other hand, Hodges also did the original "Get Carter," which isn't too great at all.

Bob DeNiro has always been a loon. And I don't like his actiing much either.
The original Get Carter is a fine film. I am God and I get to decide.

What's BIM music?

First "Showtime", now this.

One thing you can say for De Niro, he's not a snob about what projects he undertakes. Remeber that awful "Rocky and Bullwinkle" movie?

Letsee.... War, Pestilence, Famine, and.. uh.... oh yes, that'd be ROBERT DE NERO.

What the fuck happened to Travis Bickle?
Must everything I love fail me so spectacularly?

Up next, Iggy Pop in Ramsey Yousef : Misunderstood Hero.

DeNiro will be producing the musical but hasn't ruled out a part in the musical down the road. Queen did die the day Freddie did. There was talk of replacing him with another singer but that never panned out. Plus, John Deacon, their bassist has become a recluse in recent years.
posted by Lanternjmk at 5:21 AM on March 27, 2002

Is it the need for adulation that keeps Brian and Roger putting out sub-par product and get involved with schemes like this musical? They're multi-millionaires, why not take it easy and do some of the things they complained they never had time to do while Queen was touring.

Dean: I have to disagree about the original "Get Carter". Michael Caine was the hardest, baddest-ass mofo that ever walked the planet in that movie (until Bob Hoskins starred in "The Long Good Friday").

And then at the end, after he's made good on all his vengeance, some no-name with Magnum P.I.'s ring picks him off with a sniper rifle. It's the story of my life.

Get Carter was a disgrace to the butter that was on the popcorn that I ate while enduring that disgusting waste of film.
posted by adampsyche at 8:32 AM on March 27, 2002

well, adam, I wouldn't go that far. I just thought it wasn't as great as Croupier. But rocketman, you're making me consider giving it another shot. And looking for "Long Good Friday."
(and we're not talking about the stallone remake, which I won't consider watching even once.)

De Niro has been crap for at least the past 10 years... don't forget, his latest movie co-stars William Shatner!
