I've spent my Canada Day drinking beer in my underwear, as John A. MacDonald would have surely wished. I have also curmudgeonly avoided nearly all forms of social interaction, being as it is far too hot out for any but the most basic biological processes.

Geez, mrjohnmuller, don't put your beer in your underwear. Not even Sir John A did that.

And a correction to the What to Eat article. Herr's Ketchup Potato Chips are a thing here too. Yummy.

Sir John A. would probably have gone for a tall glass of gin tbh.

BTW the pictured can of maple syrup is how maple syrup should come. Always so jarring when photographers use maple syrup in some foo foo jug (NSFW).

I'm a bad American who didn't know it was Canada Day until I arrived in Saint John, NB this afternoon for an impromptu long weekend vacation. Now I'm drinking a local pint on the waterfront, awaiting some food and fireworks. Thanks, Canada!

Mitheral, why would you think that image is NSFW?

Yes, I do happen to work in a maple syrup repository and patriotic bikini factory. We have a Canada Council grant!

If you're wanting to celebrate in a more literary way, you could pick up a nice Canadian book and read over the long holiday weekend.
Canada has a wealth of writers telling today’s tales, revisiting our past and imagining our future. Here are 100 works of nonfiction that will make you proud to be a Canadian. (Check out our previous editions: 100 novels and 100 young adult books that make you proud to be Canadian.)

On a positive note it appears to be the tastier grade b maple syrup.

Happy Canada Day from the land of the free. We were just in Canada last week and I have been kicking myself ALL DAY for not buying one of the approximately 10,000 CANADA tshirts arrayed across Pearson Terminal 1. I'm also not sure my lab appreciated the Red Green and Bob & Doug videos I shared with them. Oh well.

I spent Canada Day helping Shepherd construct a countertop in our basement for future home canning, going to an art festival, playing a card game, drinking beer, casting our fantasy version of the Warren Ellis comic Planetary, capped off with cookies and an episode of Arrow.

As a American now living in the Great White North, might I say I love being here and I never want to go back home. That shit is all kindsa messed up now. No thank you.

I hope I will be celebrating next Canada Day as a citizen!

We used to celebrate Canada Day in my border town school. I always wondered, if they wanted to make it a holiday, why didn't they give us the day off instead? What did I know, I was just a stupid kid.

As long as you don't decide to celebrate Canada Day by invading the US and burning our Capitol again, I am beside you, my neighbors.

Depending on how November goes, I reserve the right to reframe this sentiment next year.

These are a few of my favourite Canadian things:

The Royal Canadian Air Farce Chicken Cannon

Trailer Park Boys theme song

"Phantom of the Ottawas", probably the best song parody Double Exposure ever did, sadly not on the Internet anywhere.

Ian and Sylvia - Four Strong Winds

Corb Lund - Hard on Equipment

Louis-Hippolyte LaFontaine and Robert Baldwin by John Ralston Saul

Edmonton Oilers Stanley Cup wins, most of which I listened to on the radio

Peter Gzowski

The fact that Canadian multiculturalism and the world's largest Easter egg were both invented by Ukrainian Canadians, a group you probably don't think about very often.

The railroad line to Churchill, Manitoba, which I've never been on but which enchanted me on the map when I was a kid.

Most Canadian Soundtrack Ever: Due South

"Ride Forever" is a standout. So is "32 Down On The Robert MacKenzie."

Happy Canada Day, and I hope you're out at the cabin or whatever you call it by you.

My BF and I flew in to Montreal because it was easier to meet up with his aunt there and drive down to Vermont (and we will eventually hit Boston for July 4th as well), so we got to see Canada Day stuff in the Old Port. It was VERY interesting -- they had a citizenship ceremony there on the port...and it was even protested by Old Port workers who were on strike. It definitely highlighted some of the tensions that are probably well worn in Quebec.

Here is something meta-Canadian: Garnett's Homemade Beer

Background for the non-Canadians

Canadian hero Stan Rogers was famous for his song Barrett's Privateers (among others). Stan's brother Garnet was also a musician, but it was a notorious batch of homebrew that earned him the title role in this spoof of his brothers song, by another musician, Ian Robb. Robb's band made sure this was played at any festival where Stan appeared.

Of course, I learned all this from Stuart MacLean . Oh, Canada!

Every year down here in San Jose (California) we have a CanadAmerica Day party sometime between the 1st and 4th. Every year I stitch together a bunch of Canadian and American videos.

You guys are making my job so much easier this year. Well, somewhat easier as I did just spend 20 minutes watching (and cheering) the Oilers win some Stanley Cups. Hey, I've got until Sunday to finished this thing off... let's watch some Due South.

Ok, I have slept for many hours and now I can finally process what happened yesterday. Here is the moral of what happened yesterday.

The Blue Jays are so fantastic that not only can they take a team on a 13 game win streak and prevent them from scoring for SIXTEEN INNINGS, they can do it with a shortstop pitching.

One of my favourite things about living in Quebec is that people care only slightly more about Canada Day than I do. While it's unfortunate that the trade off is to have a different brand of nationalism, it feels nice in the moment. At least where I live, St. Jean-Baptiste day is equally ignored.

Of course when I go back to Ontario I still get some nightmarish "fuck you's" for not being an impassioned nationalist fool.
