That was briefly diverting. Still, I almost wonder if it came about as the result of a wager.

“I bet you I can make a video game which involves pressing and holding one button and then carefully scrutinizing the screen for a while to see when you stop pressing the button.”

“You’re on.”

I don't own a car, but whenever I rent one or use an auto share car and need to pump gas into it, I always make a game of trying to land on an even dollar amount, so this is weirdly satisfying.

I felt pretty good about my score of 24¢, and then I saw the high scores :|

See also Retro Drift (part of Gamesnacks, posted here a couple months ago), and probably others too.

I was thinking the other day about that weird American Express ad Seinfeld made, about the "perfect pump". Which was always a weird ad, because I never got the creepy gas station guy who appears overjoyed whenever someone doesn't have a perfect pump...like, what is it to him? And actually, doesn't it make his life harder when you don't have a perfect pump because he has to carry around a mountain of change to deal with you giving him $21.00 for a $20.37 fillup? Or does he expect you'll leave the overage as a tip? What, exactly, does he do to deserve that tip because he appears to just stand around and wait for you to pay? How, exactly, is the Amex card "letting me do more" at the gas station?

These are the questions that still haunt me some nights when I can't sleep. And now I think the sound effects from that commercial should be part of the game.

Hunh. I got a score of $0.01 but it didn't prompt me for the high score thingy. But then I only had to pump $0.25 of gas in the 1920s so it wasn't all that hard.

It was kinda fun for a second in the exact same way trying to do the same thing in real life is only with less fraughtness in the form of "oh, I fucked up, now I get a pocket full of change"

Seanmpuckett, I think just like golf you have to finish the whole course.

Canadian pumps for a couple decades now have asked how much you want. Is this not the case in the US?

@nubs, every single time I pull out my debit card I make the "ehh uhh? ohhh" sound. Burned into my brain.

No real American is gonna let a goddamn gas pump tell him when to stop pumping. Lock that trigger down and keep it locked.

I played a few rounds but then decided that pumping gas isn't fun enough to spend any more time on it.

After you master that, try getting even gallons. When they're measured to 3 decimal places, that's where the fun is.

"High Scores

There used to be high scores. Then HN hacked. This is why we can't have nice things."

Sometimes a hacked high score can be a nice thing in and of itself.

Not 100% sure which of the several you are referring to but I note currently three of them contain the character string HutinPuy.

Huy (хуй) is Russian slang for “penis,” so this looks like a malapropesque comment, like marking the score with DrumpTickhead.

Most of the time I aim for a round number when I’m filling up, even though I have literally never paid cash for gas. I guess I learned this from my parents?
